Tartabull's power made him one of the most feared sluggers in the late 1980s and early '90s, but a rash of injuries, poor defense, and high strikeout numbers created glaring holes in his game.
Tartabull got his first taste of the major leagues as a young kid, when he followed his father, Jose Tartabull, around the locker rooms during his own nine-year tenure.
Tartabull promptly became one of the five richest players in the game when he signed a five-year deal worth $25.5 million with the New York Yankees in January 1992.

Veteran slugger Danny Tartabull, who has hit more home runs in the majors than any current Padre, has told the Padres he'd like to play for them in 2000.
Tartabull, who hasn't played in the majors since 1997, told the Padres he'd accept the minimum salary of $200,000 if he made the 25-man roster.
A potential downside being weighed by Towers and staff is that Tartabull, an outfielder/first baseman, would reduce the playing time of a younger player, and the Padres have said they intend to see what youngsters such as Mike Darr and Gary Matthews Jr.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It looks as if the Red Sox are about to sign Danny Tartabull to a contract in an attempt to shore up their outfield and provide manager Jimy Williams with a little right-handed thump.
Tartabull, 34, had only seven at-bats with the Phillies after signing a $2-million contract because he suffered a broken foot.
Duquette said that even if the Sox do sign Tartabull, they would still be looking for another right-handed bat, perhaps as a way of providing motivation for Tartabull.
