This is Danshuei's most prominent monument to foreign involvement in Taiwan.

Here in Danshuei (hey, I can't find a reliably correct spelling, and so I go with what sounds ok - uh, not that I can actually pronounce it correctly...) we have just returned from visiting a team of YWAM church planters in Maoli (couple hour train/bus trip from here).
We will continue on here in Danshuei for another week doing a variety of ministry works, most of which I don't know of off the top of my head.
And, seeing as how I don't recall what time exactly we signed into this internet cafe for an hour (nearly $1USD for that hour) I had better post this so that I know it makes it to the blogsite and is not lost in a heap of Chinese chracters.

In more modern times, the Ketagalan plains aborigines were early inhabitants of the Danshuei and Jilong region of Taiwan's north coast.
In the late 19th century the area still belonged to Danshuei district, but eventually the Japanese colonial authorities incorporated it into Taipei.
Caoshan Management Bureau, established in 1945, was redesignated as Yangmingshan Management Bureau in 1950 when the area was renamed Yangmingshan at the suggestion of local representatives, in honor of the Ming dynasty philosopher Wang Yang-ming(1472-1529).

From Keelung 雞籠; and Danshuei淡水 in the north, right down to southern Taiwan, these early Chinese visitors left their mark.
It was said that an experienced fisherman could reach Keelung or Danshuei from the mouth of the Min River 閩江 on the Fujian coast in only one long day or night of sailing.
For example, it is recorded that fishermen from Fuzhou 福州 sailed to Danshuei on the night of the fourth day of the fifth lunar month, arrived at dawn, fished, and then returned to the mainland to make preparations for the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

Soon thereafter, Ming loyalist and general Jheng Cheng-gong brought his forces to Taiwan during his resistance war against the Manchus, and drove out of Taiwan the two European countries, as well as the religions they had introduced.
In 1860, two British missionaries, the Reverend Carstairs Douglas and Reverend H.L. Mackenzie, arrived in Danshuei and Bangka (present-day Wanhua in Taipei) to preach the gospel.
To honor his contributions and dedication to Taiwan, a street in Danshuei is named after MacKay, one of very few foreigners commemorated in this way on the island.

The results also reveal that the amount and kinds of materials, which are either dissolved or suspended in the water, control light attenuation through the water column.
