Dante B. Fascell Papers - University of Miami Library
Dante B. Fascell was born in Bridgehampton, New York on March 9, 1917, and moved to Miami in 1925 at the age of eight.
Congressman Fascell began his political career as a legal attaché to the State legislative delegation from Dade County, Florida from 1947-1950, then as a member of the Florida State House of Representatives from 1950-1954.
Dante Fascell was elected as a Democrat to the 84th U.S. Congress on January 3, 1955 and served for 38 years as the representative from the Nineteenth District of Florida, including parts of Dade and Monroe counties.

 Washingtonpost.com: Politics
Fascell was a "centrist" by age and inclination, and was credited with pushing the real business of foreign affairs with skill and deceptive ease through his committee and the House.
Fascell, who was listened to in both Republican and Democratic White Houses, sponsored the 1990 resolution that authorized the dispatch and use of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf.
Fascell was not able to exert more influence on events, it was probably largely due to the institutional weakness of the House, as opposed to the Senate, in foreign affairs.

Fascell clearly believed that the decision surrounding the declaration of the apparent successful candidates would not be difficult.
Fascell clearly believed that the apparent winner would almost always be easy to identify, but also recognized that there had been at least three elections in American history when transition assistance would not have been given.
As Fascell appeared to argue, transition funds and assistance can be released to the apparent successful candidates even in an exceedingly close election, whether measured by popular vote (e.g., 1960) or electoral vote (e.g., 1916, in which Woodrow Wilson won the presidency by a mere 23 electoral votes).
