Seventh Sphere: Saturn - the contemplative (Cantos XXI and XXII).
Dante's allegory, however, is more complex, and, in explaining how to read the poem (see the "Letter to Can Grande della Scala"), he outlines other levels of meaning besides the allegory (the historical, the moral, the literal, and the anagogical).
Dante was one of the first in the Middle Ages to write of a serious subject, the Redemption of man, in the low and vulgar language of Italian, not Latin as one might expect for such a serious topic.

As Dante examines the pitch to determine its composition, Virgil yells for him to watch out: a demon races up the rocks on the side of the pit, grabbing a new soul and tossing him into the flness.

Dante's use of Virgil is one of the richest cultural appropriations in literature.
Virgil had provided Dante with moral instruction in survival as an exile, which is the theme of his own poem as well as Dante's, but he clung to his faith in the processes of history, which, given their culmination in the Roman Empire, were deeply consoling.
Dante became known as the divino poeta, and in a splendid editionof his great poem published in Venice in 1555 the adjective was applied to the poem's title; thus, the simple Commedia became La divina commedia, or The Divine Comedy.

Falvo: The Irony of Deception in Malebolge
This is a central question of which Dante, the poet, takes full awareness at mid-point in his journey through Hell, as his poetry must go on with the fraud, the «fiction» of the journey, in order to describe fully and effectively God's outward manifestation of Love and Justice.
The first hint of Virgil's limitations is given by Dante's subtle comparison of his guide (who displays his confidence at this renewed encounter with the devils) to the «poverello» («poor beggar») who, rushed by the fury and uproar of dogs, «di sùbito chiede ove s'arresta» («straightway begs from where he stops», vv.
Therefore Dante's comparison should be carefully viewed at different levels: «grammatically», it refers directly to the ferocity of the dogs and the devils; «dramatically», it creates a tension between Virgil's presupposed behavior and his actual conduct; «poetically», it unveils the limits of reason in recognizing the great evil embodied by these devils.
