Danvers is a town located in Essex County, Massachusetts.
The present day town of Danvers was formerly named Salem Village, and is close to the city of Salem, Massachusetts.
While early depositions and interviews took place in Salem Village starting in February 1692, the actual trials and a majority of depositions and interviews were moved to the then Salem Town (now named Salem) in May 1692.

This town, in its original limits, embracing what was the village proper and the middle parishes of Salem, was incorporated as a district January 28, 1752; and as a town, June 16, 1657 [sic].
It is supposed to have been named in honor of Sir Danvers Osborn, Bart., governor of New York in 1753.
Some of the distinguished persons who have originated in Danvers are : Moses Porter (1755-1822), a brigadier-general, U. army; George Peabody (1795-1869), an eminent banker and philanthropist; Daniel Putnam King (1801-1850), a scientific farmer, and M.C. from 1843 to 1849; Hannah O'Brien Chaplin Conant (1842-1865), an able author and editor, and an Oriental scholar.

Although Putnam never quite attained the national renown of famous heroes like Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone, in his own time his reckless courage and fighting spirit were known far beyond Connecticut's borders through the circulation of folk legends celebrating his exploits.
Putnam was born in Salem Village (now Danvers), Massachusetts, to Joseph and Elizabeth Putnam, a prosperous farming family of Salem Witch Trials fame.
In 1740, at the age of 22, he moved to Pomfret in northeastern Connecticut where land was cheaper and easier to obtain.
