Historically the town's industry centred on the manufacture of shoes, carpets, and bricks; Danvers is now engaged in a mix of suburban commerce, agriculture, and light manufacturing.
Danvers was incorporated in 1757, when the name was changed from Salem Village.
Among his many friends was one named Danvers, who loved him so much that he said nothing would make him so happy as that George should marry one of his nine daughters.

 Dictionary of Canadian Biography
      Danvers Osborn of Chicksands, Bedfordshire, was the son of John Osborn and Sarah Byng, daughter of George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington, and sister of Admiral John Byng.
Danvers’ grandfather was Sir John Osborn, 2nd baronet, and from him he inherited the title in 1720, as his father had already died.
Sir Danvers was greatly affected by her death and never seemed to recover his spirit afterwards.

He entered the office of the lords commissioners of trade and plantations, of which his brother John was then secretary; and in 1753 he went to America as private secretary to Sir Danvers Osborn, just appointed governor of New York.
Osborn committed suicide soon after reaching New York (Oct. 6), but Pownall remained in America, devoting himself to studying the condition of the American colonies.
At the Albany Congress, in 1754, he met Benjamin Franklin, and a life-long friendship between the two resulted.

This town, in its original limits, embracing what was the village proper and the middle parishes of Salem, was incorporated as a district January 28, 1752; and as a town, June 16, 1657 [sic].
It is supposed to have been named in honor of Sir Danvers Osborn, Bart., governor of New York in 1753.

 Sir Danvers Osborn
Sir Danvers Osborn was born at the family seat of Chicksands Priory, Shefford, County of Bedford, 17 Nov 1715, and was thus in the thirty-eighth year of his age when he took charge of the Government of New York.
Plunged into inconsolable grief at the death of his wife, this office was secured for him in the hope that the entire change of scene, as well as enforced activity, would be beneficial.
Clinton menaced them with punishments; they defied him, and boldly pronounced his conduct "arbitrary, illegal, and a violation of their rights." Yielding to the democratic pressure, Clinton left the province, and was succeeded by Sir Danvers Osborn, on whose goodness and integrity the people relied for quiet and just rule.

Osborn was related to the 2nd Earl of Halifax (who Halifax, Nova Scotia is named after) and was a commander of the Colonel Bedford Regiment under the Duke of Cumberland during the Rebellion of 1745.
Osborn later served as a MP for Bedfordshire from 1747 to 1753.
Saddened by her death, Osborn committed suicide four days after arriving.
