Merging Highway, History and Community in Vermont
Danville, with a population of about 2,000, is the quintessential New England town.
Danville was selected as a pilot site for this creative collaboration precisely because this highway project embodies all these elements.
Walls and fences, for instance, evoke not only Vermont's character, but they also are practical building elements that give a coherence to the overall project and restore the boundaries between the community and the highway.

Beginning with an artist-led visioning of the history and future of the small town of Danville, VT and its central Green, the collaborators have begun designing a highway with artistic enhancements that fits the human context, landscape, economic development needs, and the historical values of the community.

 Danville, Vermont, New England, USA
In fact, the name was suggested by a friend of Ethan Allen's, Michel Guillaume St. Jean de Crèvecouer, to honor another Frenchman, Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d'Anville, who had been France's royal cartographer for more than 60 years, and who is considered to have singlehandedly done more to change mapmaking than any man who ever lived.
Correspondence between Allen and de Crèvecouer about names for Vermont towns is a matter of record.

The Danville Project - Vermont Arts Council   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
When Alexander L. Aldrich of the Vermont Arts Council called Kingdom County Productions and asked me to produce and direct a documentary film about rebuilding a road in Danville, VT the subject certainly didn't jump out at me. My last two documentary films were about domestic violence, murder and the healing process, very dramatic stuff.
This isn’t simply a story about a road; it is the story of a town, of a rural village dealing with change, with growth, and possibilities for the future.
Rather, this creative process will take the town of Danville to a new, renewed and beautiful place, where the collaborative spirit resonates and where everyone involved will be proud of the journey they have taken together.

The highway throughout the rest of Vermont, on either side (east and west) of the village, had been widened and better designed, but VTrans could not reach agreement with village residents on its plans for the “Main Street, Danville” portion of the Project.
The Council was invited to oversee a process in which artists were engaged to help the residents of Danville articulate a community vision which could be translated back to VTrans and help break the two-decade-old impasse.
In its first year, the Project expanded to include the Vermont Council on Rural Development [VCRD], and has attracted considerable national attention as a model of a successful interagency partnership driven by an awareness of the importance of context-sensitive design..
