At the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, Danyon Loader’s first-place finish in both the 400m and 200m freestyles distinguished him as his country’s first Olympic gold medallist in swimming since New Zealander Malcolm Champion swam on a combined Australasian Team in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden.
Loader was his country’s first swimmer to break world records (short course) in two different strokes, butterfly and freestyle.
Danyon Loader is both ordinary and extraordinary, a quiet achiever who is an inspiration to thousands of his compatriots.

The trouble with Loader is that he doesn't understand, or indeed even wants to understand, what goes with the territory of being a success.
I know from personal experience Loader is a difficult sportsman to interview, and it's only out of a sense of duty to their readers, viewers and listeners that other media bother to call him up for a quote, or two.
I assume Loader's argument would be that he is a swimmer and owes the media and the public nothing.

The battle for line honours was equally exciting among the six teams and the night before the relay a tradition was established with each team choosing funny if not absurd names for their teams somewhat inspired by the colours of their team’s swimming caps.
Each team chose different tactics with some aiming to milk the most out of the swell while others tried to navigate as direct a course as possible – no easy feat in the deep blue of the Mamanuca’s.
