BBC NEWS | UK | Daphne Oram, the unsung pioneer of techno
In January 1961, as a schoolboy, I attended a lecture Daphne gave at the Mermaid Theatre in London, and was able to pass on greetings from a colleague of hers in Canada whom I had had the good fortune to meet a few months before.
Like all pioneers, Daphne never knew what she couldn't achieve because she was inventing everything as she went along: not only an original artform but, as we know, some original machinery to create the sounds themselves.
Daphne Oram's works should be recognised alongside those of Edgard Varese, Oscar Sala, Louis and Bebe Barron, Iannis Xenakis, and Olivier Messiaen.

 Guardian | Daphne Oram
By 1956, Oram's attempts to convince the BBC of the value of electronic music and musique concréte were bearing fruit.
My first contact with Oram was in 1961, while I was a music student, when she generously invited me and a friend to stay for a weekend; it was my first experience of working in an electronic music studio.
Oram never married; she is survived by her two brothers.

 Oramics by Daphne Oram
The technique of Oramics was developed by Daphne Oram, who was an electronic composer working at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in England from 1959 onwards.
The attraction of this technique was a direct relation of a graphic image to the audio signal and even though the system was monophonic the flexibility of control over the nuances of sound production was unmatched in all but the most sophisticated analogue voltage controlled synthesisers.
Daphne Oram continued to use the process throughout the sixties, producing work for film and theatre including; "Rockets in Ursa Major"(1962), "Hamlet"(1963) and "Purple Dust" (1964).

In London in 1962, Daphne Oram designed and built the Oramics Graphic System, allowing composers to specify sounds by drawing shapes on multiple strips of 35-millimeter transparent film.
The film was then illuminated from above and passed over a cluster of photocells that measured changes in the intensity of light on the film and controlled a synthesizer accordingly.

The beeb is running a piece on the virtually unknown pioneer of electronic music and soundscapes Daphne Oram, who hooked up with BBC radio in the early 1940s and immediately began finding creative ways to hook up tape decks and other equipment to create sounds no one had ever heard before.
Her job eventually brought her into contact with modernist / experimental composers Karlheinz Stockhausen and John Cage.
Later, Oram pushed the envelope of the audio-visual bridge with "Oramics" :

Much of it's previously unreleased; IDM heads are sure to be hunting this down for the Autechre track alone, but they'd be daft to miss the more historically inclined material here.
Relatively well known names like Luc Ferrari, Percy Grainger, Vladimir Ussachevsky and Morton Subotnick (with a 1962 piece entitled "Mandolin") are all present, but there's intriguing music from more neglected figures (unsurprisingly they're women), namely Radiophonic Workshop founder Daphne Oram and composer Johanna M Beyer (1888-1944).
Like Delia Derbyshire, Oram was a pioneer whose work remained ignored for much of her life; as a result it's hard to say how influential she actually was, but there's no doubt that "Four Aspects" sounds much younger than its 43 years.
