Dar es Salaam grew during the 1940s and became capital of the independent Tanzania in 1961.
Dar es Salaam is the Indian Ocean terminus of the Tazara Railway (opened in 1975), and also of the railways to the lake ports of Kigoma and Mwanza;; a road links it with Ndola in the Zambian copperbelt, and oil is carried to Zambia by pipeline from Dar es Salaam's refineries.
In 1973 it was decided by a national vote to move the capital from Dar es Salaam to the inland city of Dodoma, a move which had not been fully completed by 2003.

In 1988, the estimated population of Dar es Salaam, according to a national census, was 1 360 865.
Dar es Salaam is at sea level, and the DSS site lies between latitudes 6.82° and 6.89°S and longitudes 39.24° and 39.30°E. The climate is typically tropical, with hot weather throughout the year (range, about 26°—35°C) and two rainy seasons: short rains in November—December and long rains in March—May.
The region of destination was obtained for 15 124 of these: most (75%) migrated to another part of Dar es Salaam; the rest, to various parts of the country, except for 172 who moved to other countries outside Tanzania.

The Msimbazi river in Dar es salaam for instance, whose water is extensively used for irrigation of numerous smallscale farms along its valley, is heavily polluted with industrial effluents.
Domestic sewage in Dar es Salaam produces pollutants with an annual BOD of 11,681 tonnes, 12,641 tonnes of suspended solids (SS), 2,222 tonnes of oil and 3,320 tonnes of phosphorous compounds (P).

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug 16 (AFP) - At least 456 people, including 128 children, have died of tuberculosis (TB) in the Tanzanian economic capital of Dar es Salaam in 2000-2001, health authorities said on Friday.
Dar es Salaam Regional Medical Officer Deo Mtasiwa said: "The trend is really serious and efforts must be made to reverse it."
He said during 2000-2001, a total of 5,602 TB cases were reported in Dar es Salaam region.

DAR ES SALAAM, 17 May 2005 (IRIN) - The Tanzanian government has terminated its 10-year contract with an international firm for the provision of water and sewerage services to the country's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, for what it described as "poor performance".
"The water supply services in Dar es Salaam and neighbouring places have deteriorated rather than improve since this firm took over two years ago," Edward Lowassa, the minister for water and livestock development, said on Friday at a news conference, where he announced the cancellation of the contract with the firm known as City Water.
A new firm, to be known as Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation, was being formed to take over from City Water, Lowassa said.

City Water, a joint venture between Biwater, Gauff Ingenieure and Dar es Salaam based STM, was awarded a ten year management contract by the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA) in February 2003 to manage the technical and commercial operation of the water and sewerage infrastructure for the capital and surrounding area.
Before the deportations, minister Lowassa had announced that he planned to terminate the contract but City Water was granted an injunction by the High Court in the UK to prevent termination pending the outcome of the arbitration, to which all parties are bound to submit disputes.
