US planes attacked Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban on the frontline north of Kabul early today as Washington admitted to mistakenly hitting civilian areas in earlier bombing raids.
The commander, Mohammad Atta, said his forces in the Dara-e-Souf valley, 70 km south of the key northern town of Mazar-e-Sharif, had mounted an offensive towards the district of Keshendeh during the night.
He said “wave after wave” of US air attacks on the enemy lines had enabled his men to win control of four villages in fighting which left between 70 and 80 Taliban troops dead.

A spokesman for the Afghan Taliban claimed Saturday that 40 to 50 U.S. troops were killed while their helicopter was shot down by the Taliban anti-aircraft gunfire, according to the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).
The spokesman, Mullah Amir Khan Muttaqi told AIP that a U.S. helicopter crashed for unknown reasons in Nawur district of Ghazni province and a second gunship was shot down by the Taliban soldiers as it came to rescue the crew of the first.
Early Saturday, a Taliban diplomat claimed that two U.S. aircraft were shot down by Taliban anti-aircraft gunfire in southern Afghan province of Ghazni during the U.S. air strikes Friday night.
