Then on to the Darabuka - he uses the standing technique to play it which is rare for a Westerner and probably best avoided if a beginner but very useful for Int/Adv to observe.
After this a demonstration of SAADI is given with Dave Murray on Douf and Tim on Darabuka.
It sounds OK when he plays it and he is using a clay/fishskin Darabuka to demonstrate and perhaps it works better on these than the metal type but he does use it on these later on.

The cornerstone of Egyptian drumming is the goblet-shaped Arabian tabla (not to be confused with Indian tabla), a drum very similar to the Middle Eastern darabuka or doumbek.
The origins of the Arabian tabla almost certainly date back to the Persian drum called the zarb (as is also true for the Turkish darabuka).
This is similar to the‘snapping’ found on the Middle Eastern darabuka or dumbek.

Arabic music does sometimes use a stringed instrument with frets called a buzuq (saz is a similar Turkish instrument), but the frets are movable and can accomodate more than 12 tones to the octave.
Darbouka is a goblet-shaped drum with a crisp, powerful bass tone and a clear, sharp rim sound (dialect differences account for a wide variety of pronunciations, and thus transliterations, including darabeka, and darabuka).
It is also known as a tabla, not to be confused with the Indian instrument of the same name.

 A Practical Introduction to Middle Eastern Drumming
The Riq (what we often call a tambourine) at many points in history was the "glory" instrument – more prestigious than any other percussion instrument in the band.
In the modern day, the goblet shaped hand drum often called a Dumbek or Darabuka (sometimes "tabla") has become the drum of choice among many Middle Eastern percussionists.
A dumbek is generally played by holding the drum in your lap under your left (or non-dominant hand) arm and striking with the fingers of both hands.

Reuel “Raz” Mesinai (aka Badawi, aka the Bedouin) was born in Jerusalem, Israel, and was first introduced to Middle Eastern drumming at age seven by dervish sheik Murshid Hassan.
