		Its capital is Catbalogan and covers the western portion of Samar island as well as several islands in the Samar Sea located to the west of the mainland.Calbayog City, the lone city of Samar Island is located in the province of Samar.
		Bordering the province to the north is Northern Samar and to the east is Eastern Samar.
		Samar is connected to Leyte via the San Juanico Bridge, which spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the country.

		CATBALOGAN, Samar – The entire provincial board members of this province, in a unanimous decision, has approved a resolution endorsing the conduct of a “surface mining” of manganese in this island town of Daram, one of the 25 municipalities of this province.
		According to VG Redaja, the request of a certain Serafia Cobarubias to operate a small-scale mining in Daram, Samar, particularly in the villages of Locob-lokob, Iquiran and Casaganay was supported with all necessary documents being required by law.
		As this developed, the resolution authorizing Caborubias, a native of Gandara Samar, to operate a small-scale mining of manganese in three Daram villages subject to the provisions of Presidential Decree No. 1121 and 1586, DENR Administrative Order 2003-30 and other existing laws on the matter, was approved.

		He said troops of the 82nd Recon Company and other personnel of the 801st Brigade under the leadership of Col. Rafael Romero, conducted strike operations after receiving complaints from local residents regarding the massive extortion activities allegedly conducted by the NPA rebels in the area.

	Sun.Star Manila - SC reverses ruling on Samar mayor's conviction
		Daram mayor Benito Astorga was convicted for arbitrarily detained two policemen and agents of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) who were conducting an investigation on alleged illegal logging operations in his town.
		The DENR team was then brought to Astorga's house in Daram, where they had dinner and drinks.
		Because of the incident, the mayor was charged with and convicted of arbitrary detention by the Sandiganbayan.

		The original venue of the case was transferred from the Zumarraga, Samar regional trial court to prevent a miscarriage of justice since Figueroa’s wife is now the Mayor of Zumarraga.
