The UNESCO has accorded approval for declaring Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram `heritage sites' under the extension of monument programme, for conservation, preservation and protection of their heritage character, the Special Commissioner of the Town and Country Planning, S. Speaking at the World Tourism Day Celebrations organised by the State Tourism Department here last night, Dr. Gurumurthy said, the UNESCO as exemption has approved both the centres even though only one centre in a country in a year is given approval.

A rare sculpture of Lord Siva with a flute in his hands has been found at the Irawadeeswara temple at Darasuram, near Kumbakonam, by Kudavayil Balasubramnian, researcher of the Saraswathi Mahal Library, Thanjavur.
The tradition is to sculpt Vishnu as Krishna with a flute in his hands.
But the image at the Darasuram temple bears a deer and an axe in the hands above (symblos of Siva) and a flute in the two hands below, similar to that of Venugopalan.
