IFVs are similar to armoured personnel carriers (APCs), designed to transport five to ten infantrymen and their equipment.
IFVs are usually tracked, but some wheeled vehicles fall into this category, too.
IFVs are mostly much less heavily armed and armoured than Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), but they sometimes carry heavy missiles, such as the NATO \'TOW\' missile and Soviet \'Spigot\' which offer a significant threat to tanks.

 60mm HVG Chilean
The Chilean version disposed the automatic loader, which they felt was too bulky, complex and slow (and unnecessary, given the small size of the rounds, there is the rumour that this system was based on a similar one employed in the soviet BMP1 IFV).
This required a completely new recoil system, which was subcontracted to the steel manufacturing company MADECO, that had already made many contracts for the Army, and produced the system to full satisfaction of the customer.
May it be that others can use it successfully, particularly now that many countries are finding its IFVs to be under gunned with only 25mm weapons.

Infantry Fighting Vehicles - A Global Survey   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The exact definition of what constitutes an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV), also known as Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV), and most particularly the identification of the sqecific characteristics that differentiate an IFV/AIFV from an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), involves not only semantics and technological aspects but also operational issues.
The capability for the infantry squad to use their individual weapons from inside the vehicle used to be another discriminating factor, but this feature has since been effectively abandoned.
Although the MBT companion role remains a very important definying characteristic, IFVs/ AIFVs are increasingly also used on their own.
