Van den Bussche is currently a firefighter and paramedic for the City of Portage la Prairie and has also worked on the railway, in construction and agriculture.
Van Den Bussche was quick to add he as well as his fellow candidates all have a realistic chance of winning this riding in the next election.

While Pallister felt the Liberal campaign was negative, the election worked out as a huge positive for him as he captured 22,720 votes, 65.9 per cent of the 34,465 valid votes cast in Portage-Lisgar — that eclipsed the 17,323 or 50 per cent he captured of 34,425 ballots cast in the November 2000 election.
Kuhl came a distant second with 6,099 (17.7 per cent), while Van Den Bussche got 3,234 votes (9.4 per cent.)
