Multilocus DNA fingerprinting was used to study genetic variation of some mini- and microsatellite DNA markers in parthenogenetic populations of the species D.unisexualis, D.dahli, D.armeniaca and D.rostombekovi from Armenia.
It was shown that parthenogenetic Darevskia lizards possess species-specific DNA fingerprinting patterns revealed with all used mini- and microsatellite probes, but they also shows some level of intraspecific variation, which was detected with microsatellite probe of different types ((GATA)n, (TCC)n, (GACA)n, (TCT)n).
We found that allelic differences of these loci were caused by variation in a number of tandem repeats in microsatellites clusters and point mutations in the flanking regions.

They can be encountered everywhere where there is plenty of water and rocks: on walls and crags, road embankments and among mountain moraines.
All darevskia are neo-endemics of various part of the Caucasus, among them 8 (32 %) - lesser-caucasian endemics, 7 - colkhic endemics, 6 are eastern-armenian endemics, very close to lesser-caucasian, 3 hyrcanians, and 1 crimean endemic.
It is believed that ancestral forms of the rock lizards were arboreal lizards, also being hygrophilous and capable of climbing trees, that inhabited tropical forests of islands that later formed the Caucasus and the Armenian Plateau.

Approximately twenty five populations, subspecies and species of genus Darevskia were studied using anonymous RAPD-markers and CLsat tandem repeats monomer sequences.
There are no similarities between Darevskia and other genera studied (including Lacerta agilis complex and L. vivipara).
So the RAPD method is informative mainly on the level of population—>subspecies—>species, but can be used to support the inclusion of some populations with the genus on the basis of a statistically meaningful number of RAPD-markers.

IngentaConnect Molecular Evolution of Satellite DNA CLsat in Lizards from the Ge...
The structure and evolution of a satellite DNA family was examined in lizards from the genus Darevskia (family Lacertidae).
Comparison of tandem units of repeated DNA (satDNA), CLsat, in all species from the genus Darevskia has shown that their variability is largely explained by single-nucleotide substitutions, which form about 50 diagnostic positions underlying classification of the family into three subfamilies.
Based on these results as well as on zoogeographic views on the taxonomy and phylogeny of the Darevskia species, hypotheses on the evolution of molecular-genetic relationships within this genus are advanced.

Abstract: Forty-seven Darevskia armeniaca specimens collected from 2 different localities in Ardahan were examined in terms of pholidosis characters, morphometric measurements and colour-pattern features.
The 2 populations were differentiated from one another in terms of the number of supraciliar plates (left-right) (SCPa-SCPb), supralabial plates (left-right) (SRLa-SRLb) and transversal series of ventral plates (TVP) according to the results of the Mann-Whitney U test.
An independent t-test based on morphometric measurements revealed significant differences in terms of the head index (HI) between the 2 populations.

[Variation of mini- and microsatellite DNA markers in populations of parthenogenetic rock lizard Darevskia rostombekovi]
Variation and clonal diversity in populations of the parthenogenetic rock lizard Darevskia rostombekovi was examined by means of multilocus DNA fingerprinting using mini- and microsatellite DNA markers M13, (GATA)4, and (TCC)50).
The animals examined were shown to exhibit a clonally inherited, species-specific pattern of DNA markers (fingerprint profile) that is different from the species-specific patterns of parthenogenetic species D. dahli, D. armeniaca, and D. unisexualis.

In 1963, we decided to check and analyse this phenomen experimentally.
A total of 130 mature Darevskia armeniaca (former Lacerta) specimens were removed from a range in Armenia, where they live at altitudes of about 1500 m, to a rocky canyon of the Teterev river in the Central Ukraine situated at an altitude of no more than 250 m (Darevsky and Szczerbak 1967).
The selected place for releasing lizards was at distance of more than 1600 km, along a straight line, from the extreme northern limits of the D. armeniaca range in the Caucasus.
