This frontier settlement was founded in 1872 by timber merchant, Joseph McMullen Dargaville and for many years access to this area for passengers and freight was by steamer via the Northern Wairoa River from Helensville which is situated at the southern end of the Kaipara Harbor.

The Dargaville Branch is a branch line railway that leaves the North Auckland Line not far south of Whangarei and runs westward to Dargaville.
In 1930, the line was open to Tangowahine, sixteen kilometres from Dargaville, but construction ceased for five years due to the Great Depression.
In 1940, trains commenced running to Dargaville, but the old railway station (used by the Donnelly's Crossing Section) was closed and a new station built at a different location, delaying the formal opening of the Dargaville Branch until 15 March 1943, over twenty years after construction began.

Dargaville is a relatively small town - there are only 17,000 people in the whole district, which runs from Kaiwaka in the South up to Waipoua forest and halfway across to Whangarei....What do you want to go to Dargaville for?
There is at least one backpacker place in Dargaville, but unless you have something specific that you are going there for, I don't think I would bother staying there - it's nicer to stay somewhere like Omapere or Opononi instead.
Over towards Dargaville but closer to Kai Iwi Lakes there is a backpackers based also on a farm but i am having trouble remembering the name, although I have heard good things about them I have never been there.
