Dargo is a quiet country township situated on the Dargo River, one hundred kilometres north of Sale in the Great Dividing Ranges.
Dargo is thought to be either an Aboriginal word possibly meaning have patience, high hills or spear fight or else the name of the division of the Brabiralung tribe which occupied the area.
The Dargo pastoral run covered the river valley but a township did not develop until gold was discovered in the rivers of the district.

Although water races and an old cemetery overlooking the town testify to a modest rush at Dargo itself, the town was primarily an intermediate staging post on the journey to the nearby fields and so it too declined with the mining.

Have ridden from Hotham to Dargo with a BOB on a tandem, about ten years ago.
Yes it was quiet along the Dargo High Plains and quite scenic (Grant is a little off the road, but worth a visit if you have time).
I have ridden an unladen MTB from Dargo to Grant and even that was hard going, but I think some of it might be sealed now so it might be easier.

It is also unusual in that the village (which is 1740 metres above sea level) is located at the top of the forty or so ski runs, which are serviced by nine ski lifts.
