This is a typical scenario for UF swimmer Darian Townsend.
Traveling under water, Townsend has gone almost unnoticed as he has become a premier athlete on UF's swim team, and that suits him just fine.
A sophomore, Townsend was part of the South African 4x100 freestyle relay team that took gold and broke a world record at the 2004 Olympics.

Darian Townsend attributed the gold medal and world record-breaking efforts to the relay team's fantastic spirit.
While at school, Townsend broke eight school records, was a member of the water polo team and the captain of the swimming team in 2002.

He handed over to Darian Townsend, who although marginally slower, maintained the pace and lead over the field and then it was up to the big powerhouse – Ryk Neethling, to literally explode for the final 100m, which he swam faster than anybody else to break the world record and upset the party.
Under US scholarship laws Darian and Lyndon may not receive any compensation for swimming, but Ryk and Roland may, as they are done with their scholarships.

Neethling, 26, said he would love to be based in his home country, like the last of the quartet, Darian Townsend, but politics got in the way of funding back home.
Townsend, who turns 20 on August 28 and who matriculated at Maritzburg College in 2002, leaves on September 3 shortly after arriving home from the Olympics to a scholarship at the University of Florida.

In the 200-yard freestyle, Sioui raced to an eighth-place finish in the championship final in a time of 1:36.14, while Townsend notched a career-best performance of 1:34.05 to place ninth and claim the consolation final crown.
For Townsend the time of 1:34.05 improves his time of 1:34.41 to rank third all-time in UF history.
