Topic: Dark Champions

In the News (Sat 6 Sep 08)

Champions (role-playing game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Champions, first published in 1981, was the first role-playing game in which character generation was guided by the player's imagination, as opposed to random dice rolls.
While Champions is the name of the game, "The Champions" is also a team of superheroes provided by the publishers as a model of a balanced team dynamic, a team of non-player character allies, or pre-created characters to allow players to skip the lengthy character creation process.
The Champions system was adapted to a fantasy genre under the title "Fantasy Hero" (the first playtest edition of Fantasy Hero appeared before Champions was published), with similar advantages and disadvantages to the original Champions game.

Hero Games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hero Games is also the publisher of the game Champions, a role-playing game where players can create and play superheroes; Fantasy Hero, where characters operate in a fantasy setting; Star Hero, which uses science fiction settings; Dark Champions, which simulates various forms of the action-adventure genre; and many other games.
The "main" (that is, most strongly supported) setting for Champions is Millennium City; for Fantasy Hero, The Turakian Age; for Star Hero, Terran Empire; and for Dark Champions, Hudson City.
Like the Villians and Vigilantes comic book mini series, the early issues printed write-up sheets allowing readers to use characters introduced in the comics in their own Champions campaigns (strangely, this is even true for characters included in the core rules, such as Icicle and Pulsar).

 RPGnet: Review of Dark Champions
Dark Champions also served as the definitive Champions guidebook for the increasingly popular "take-no-prisoners" kind of vigilante- the guy who, unlike Batman or Daredevil, wouldn't just capture the psycho killer and send him back to the asylum so he can plot yet another escape.
This is the kind of advice that would have been much appreciated in the original Dark Champions line; as I said earlier, the moral grayness (or 'mature subjects') presented in those titles made the material depressing and ultimately repetitive and stale.
SUMMARY Dark Champions is a book with vast potential for any sort of modern-day roleplaying, perhaps not AS detailed on a particular subject as say, GURPS Cops, but serving as a strong base for the entire action genre.

Champions of Norrath Review for PlayStation 2 - Gaming Age   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
As it stands, from start to finish, Champions of Norrath's environments and creatures, fantastic looking as they may look on the technical side, are dreadfully boring to look at.
Champions of Norrath is hardly different, and in certain respects, does it worse than other games in the genre.
Champions of Norrath has been billed as an online hack 'n slash for a long while now, and the dozens of irrational pitfalls do nothing but rip apart the most hyped aspect of the release.

Champions: Return to Arms - ESCMag Review
Champions: Return to Arms is the sequel to Champions of Norrath, one of the SOE's first ventures into spawning off sub-franchises from its big moneymaker, EverQuest.
Champions doesn't differ too much from the tried and true gameplay style of killing endless hordes of enemies, collecting better and better weapons, and earning experience and new skills.
Champions: Return to Arms presents another successful entry into the genre by Snowblind and SOE, but one must wonder how many more times we can visit the same objectives and dungeons before they become worn out.

Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest (PS2) Review at GameSpy.com
In fact, the only Dark Alliance gameplay element that's really missing from Norrath is jumping; since it didn't add a whole heck of a lot to the experience, it's easily forgiven.
Playing Champions of Norrath as a strictly single-player experience is fraught with tension; it's fairly tough, even on the first difficulty setting -- certainly more so than Interplay's Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II, which came out last month.
As a polished dungeon crawl, it does a great job of throwing loads of different environments and cleverly-designed and strange enemies at you to keep things interesting, which for a game like this is much more important than hiring lots of writers.

Now I'm looking at Dark Champions and an odd phrase has just popped into my head: "This is like Modern, but on all the right drugs." Ok, that's probably a really bad way of putting it, but that's what you get when you're a little tired and not screening your random thoughts.
Since Dark Champions uses the Resource Points system rather than a cash economy for characters your players will have to understand the workings of these point costs as well.
I was not a fan of the original Dark Champions - back in the day it was an add on to Champions and to me, took that genre in places I did not wish to see it go.

Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest Impressions - PlayStation 2 News at GameSpot
Champions of Norrath uses a prefix and suffix system for weapons, so a basic broadsword can be changed into a rusty broadsword of fire, indicating that it will give bonus attack damage for fire.
Even in its early state, Champions of Norrath looks like it will instantly appeal to EverQuest fans but also any fans of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, since the combat and overall controls are quite similar.
Dark Cloud 2 could very well be the PlayStation 2's Zelda, and it will appeal to fans of the action RPG genre for a long time to come.

Champions: Return to Arms Review - PlayStation 2 Review - Australia's PAL Gaming Network
With the release of Champions Return to Arms, Snowblind are hoping to redeem themselves, by offering an assortment of new quests, characters, modes and other little tweaks.
Although not particularly heavy on plot, Return to Arms picks up where Champions of Norrath left off, with the rather tasty looking elf Firiona Vie enlisting the help of your character to save Norrath from the possibility of Innoruuk's resurrection, which a bunch of his cronies are trying to set into motion.
Champions: Return to Arms is an improvement over Champions of Norrath, but just doesn't do enough to separate itself from the other games which have preceded it.

Champions of Norrath, published by the creators of EverQuest and developed by the team behind Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, is an action-RPG like none other on the PlayStation 2.
Champions is pretty much your usual RPG fare - choose a character type/class, kill monsters, gain experience points, level up and buy better weapons and equipment.
Ultimately, I will say that Champions is nothing new to the RPG scene but it does bring a higher standard to the genre (for consoles, at least) and if you like RPGs, you will probably like this.

"Dark Champions" is not a recognizable genre -- it is a specific implementation in the Action-Adventure genre.

Dark Champions: The Animated Series looks at the less grim side of vigilante crimebusting: caped crusaders with vigilante style but who refuse to kill; low-powered superheroes who fight street crime instead of world-threatening supervillains; "theme" villains with clever costumes and psychotic minds.

Dark Champions Review -- January 28, 2005 :: d20 Magazine Rack :: Are You Game Enough?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Dark Champions is the latest in genre supplements from Hero Games, this is an update from 3rd edition Champions circa 1986, that takes its setting from the grim and dark comics like The Question, Punisher and Batman and focuses on the lower end of the spectrum to masked vigilantes.
The author admits this genre is what brought him to Champions back in 1986 as he was a fan of DC Comics Batman and Vigilante and Marvel Comics characters like the Punisher and The Scourge of the Underworld.
Dark Champions is the original setting for this genre although other companies have since tackled the subject.
