		Dark Force Rising is one of those cliched-sounding titles that originates with, as far as I can tell, a Country and Western song from the early 1980s entitled Black Moon Rising.
		The "Dark Force" of the title is the fabled Katana Fleet, 200 Dreadnought Cruisers from the Old Republic that were lost in space and never recovered...
		This is the true strength of Dark Force Rising - it shows that not only is Thrawn a villain, but that his powers of deduction are every bit as falible and flimsy as his other resources, the TIE fighters and stormtroopers that the good guys wade through at every turn.

		The Dark Jedi schemes to use his awesome mastery of the Force to summon young Skywalker allay his misgivings, cunningly enthrall him, and ultimately corrupt him to the Dark Side.
		Dark Force Rising is better written than Heir to the Empire, and it details elements alluded to in that first novel.
		None of this is sufficient to stop "Dark Force Rising" from being a great piece of Star Wars lore; it's not the alltime great it could have been (and that the other two episodes of the Thrawn trilogy were) but it's certainly not a bad or a 'merely average' book either.

		The Katana fleet (known more eerily as "The Dark Force") is a fictional starfleet from the Star Wars universe, introduced in Timothy Zahn's Dark Force Rising.
		The flagship of the Katana fleet was named the Katana (hence the official name), and the nickname came from the color of the ships' hulls and from the fact that high levels of automation greatly reduced the required crew of the ships, thus reducing the amount of internal lighting needed.
		With the aid of Luke Skywalker, Mara rescued Karrde from Thrawn's forces and brought him to the New Republic.
