George Harrison: The Dark Horse Years 1976 - 1992 - PopMatters Music Review
It's inclusion in The Dark Horse Years is a necessity from a historical perspective, but from an artistic perspective this is a poor representation of the genius of this former Beatle.
The collection Dark Years gathers the lesser known albums from the late part of Harrison's career, merges them with bonus recordings, liner notes, and DVD footage to enhance and solidify his legacy.
Here Harrison is joined by his collaborator of 25 years, Eric Clapton, and a crack band to perform a wealth of Harrison originals from both his solo and Beatles career.

Review: George Harrison - "The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992"
The Dark Horse label was founded by George Harrison in 1974 to allow him time and space to fully express himself as a songwriter and musician.
His last two EMI albums, “Dark Horse” and “Extra Texture (Read All About It)” were probably “contractual obligation albums” that George needed to complete his deal with EMI.
As it was, “Dark Horse” was an easy mark for critics who often unkindly renamed it “Dark Hoarse”.

 The Dark Horse Years Review
Rejected by Warner Brothers (the distributor for Dark Horse) in its original form, the album was reworked, dropping four songs and adding replacements, including the absolutely scathing opener “Blood From A Clone” in response to what George no doubt considered a major slap in the face.
DISC ONE - Thirty Three and 1/3: Released in 1976, this was George’s age at the time, as well as the speed at which a record album (remember those?) played.
The point is, these and several other stray tracks might better have been compiled on to a “bonus disc” for inclusion in the box, instead of scattering the bonus tracks and thereby leaving the album releases in their original context.

E! Online - Music - George Harrison "Dark Horse Years 1976-1992"
Compiling five albums the former Beatle put out on his own Dark Horse label, plus a live disc and DVD, it traces the guitar man's solo career after he left the biggest band in the world and released the near classic All Things Must Pass.
Still, Harrison mustered some excellent singles during the period covered here, including "Crackerbox Place," "All Those Years Ago" and "When We Was Fab." But the inclusion of "Hottest Gong in Town" from Shanghai Surprise is simply unnecessary.
All told, this expensive set is best left to completists who will want it for the abundant bonus tracks and rare DVD clips.

By the time Dark Horse, George's record label, started releasing his records, all the critics were comparing any solo Beatle release to their last albums together, and writing about the next expected possible reunion that never happened.
Thirty-five years after The Beatles broke up we can say for sure that none of the music made by any Beatle alone can be compared to the quality of what they did together.
In 1976, Harrison tried to settle for a more commercial musical life and tried to write 3-4 minutes pop songs.
