Dark Phoenix Saga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dark Phoenix Saga is an extended X-Men storyline in the fictional Marvel Comics Universe, focusing on Jean Grey and the Phoenix Force, ending in Grey's apparent death.
Dark Phoenix was then attacked by a Shi'ar vessel to prevent her from destroying other stars.
Dark Phoenix easily defeated her foes but not before they were able to alert the Shi'ar Empress Lilandra.

 Dark Phoenix
At the moment before her death, the Phoenix Enitity entered her body, made an exact replica of it, and placed the original Jean in a protective cocoon at the bottom of the ocean.
The Phoenix copied Jean so well, that it didn't even realize what it had done, and truly believed itself to be Jean, taking her place in the X-Men.
The Phoenix is a cosmic force, and therefore cannot die.

However, Phoenix had to consume a lot of energy to generate her power and when she took off one night and flew to another galaxy and ate a sun that doomed the planet of the asparagus people, Phoenix had become Dark Phoenix.
They did a really nice job on Dark Phoenix, especially given that we are talking a little faux LEGO figure, and the Cyclops figure is pretty solid as well (I like his determined mouth).
Yes, it would be nice if you could pop off Jean's hair and turn her face around so she goes from Dark Phoenix to Phoenix, but then the problem is that Phoenix wore green while Dark Phoenix went for a sort of bloody maroon, so that was not going to work.

If this is Dark Phoenix as she was when it was like Jean, when she fought Firelord and Magneto, Darkseid would win 8/10 or so.

Dark Phoenix: The mutant telepath known as Jean Grey, one of Earth's most powerful mentalists, possessed by the comic entity known as the Phoenix.
Grey found that she could not control the Phoenix persona that inhabited her, and, with the help of Professor Charles Xavier, she was able to lock the Phoenix force away in the far recesses of her mind.
Dark Phoenix is one of the strongest mentalists in the universe.

I'm not ignoring the stars thing...stars are nothing to him, and really, they are nothing to her either...I have seen, in an issue of the FF when Nova was his herald...it might have been the issue where he consumed the Skrull homeworld...he consumed the planet and then he was just floating in space.
The reason why I said Dark Phoenix is because she didn't have any of the self imposed limitations that "good" Phoenix had.
And in the second battle between Galactus and Rachel, it was the Phoenix force itself that was active and not Rachel...it had recreated her body after she got destroyed beating Necrom and helped heal her while it "explored" the universe.

The Dark Phoenix Saga was one of the most significant plotlines in the ongoing story of the X-Men.
Jean's efforts to bury her Phoenix powers in her former alter-ego, Marvel Girl, fail when the X-Men are beaten by the Shi'Ar.
While her resurrection is metaphorically true to the name of Phoenix, Marvel's choice to bring back Jean Grey diminishes the audacity and boldness of The Dark Phoenix Saga.

Phoenix finally freed herself of Mastermind's control, but was unable to prevent the dark side of Grey's personality with the full power of the phoenix-force behind it, from overwhelming her, not having had the training necessary to repress it.
When Phoenix committed suicide, it was acting exactly as Grey herself would have done under the circumstances, since it had endowed itself with an exact copy of Grey's personality.

Dark Phoenix, where Jean actually gets corrupted and tries to destroy the Universe and whatnot, is just too "big", and too far out of Bryan Singer's vision of this X-Men Universe.

I moved on from the X-men and comics a few years after the Dark Phoenix story was done, and I missed the whole return of Jean Grey.
Phoenix was so much more significant at the end of X-men #137, and bringing Jean Grey back has made both much less so.

The Superhero Hype! Boards - Dark Phoenix
My personal theory (shared/borrowed from some others, I believe) is that the precognitive abilities Jean was demonstrating in the beginning of X2 in addition to her other psionics would give her a glimpse into a future where humanity oppresses mutants, creates the sentinels, and kills off all her former friends.
This would incorporate the rumored "influences from Days of Future Past" as well as provide a good reason for Phoenix to be "Dark" - she has seen the evil of mankind and decided to eradicate them at any cost.
If Phoenix saw the destruction caused by Sentinels in the future and tried to eradicate them only to actually cause their release It'd be interesting.
