The Dark Phoenix Saga was one of the most significant plotlines in the ongoing story of the X-Men.
With this saga, they crafted a story that completely surprised and shocked readers, demonstrating the imagination and conflict for which the mutant heroes are so well known.
While her resurrection is metaphorically true to the name of Phoenix, Marvel's choice to bring back Jean Grey diminishes the audacity and boldness of The Dark Phoenix Saga.

Phoenix (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Phoenix is among the most feared beings in the entire universe - having the power to cut and regrow any part of the universe, as well as destroy it entirely, which is part of the Phoenix's purpose: "The Judgement of the Phoenix": to burn away what doesn't work.
Phoenix lent its energy to break the connection, and kept close watch on young Jean, as it felt a kinship with the young mutant.
Phoenix generated so much heat that even Sunfire was nearly burned to death, but Weapon X used his love to bring her to her senses.

Phoenix remained an active member of the X-Men after that, but as Jean had never been trained to deal with power on that scale, the Phoenix entity also had difficulty handling it's own immeasurable power.
There the X-Men did battle with Dark Phoenix, with Professor X eventually defeating her, limiting the powers of the Phoenix with "psychic circuit breakers." But the Shi'ar arrived just as he had cured Phoenix, ready to destroy her to atone for the destruction of the D'bari system.
Phoenix would eventually commit suicide, realizing that she was a menace to all creation.

OAFE - Cyclops/Dark Phoenix Minimates review
The pinnacle of the Byrne/Claremont run on Uncanny X-Men is probably "The Dark Phoenix Saga," a story that spanned years and chronicled Jean Grey's ascent to near-godhood, her fall to evil and her ultimate redemption.
Cyclops and Dark Phoenix come in packaging similar to the main-line Minimates, and are available only from Diamond Comics at the summer conventions.
Phoenix is one of those characters who seem perennially under-represented, so getting her in a Minimate set is excellent, even if she is saddled with an unimpressive rehash like Cyclops.

How do you feel about the Dark Phoenix Saga as a comic book story? - The Superhero Hype! Boards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
I'm sure that The Dark Phoenix Saga was considered groundbreaking as a comic book story, and as a transitional story in Jean Grey's character arc, I recognize that it is huge, but in my mind, it's really not that impressive a story, as a piece of writing.
I gather that most everyone likes the concept of Jean becoming Phoenix, and has grown to accept the existence of Dark Phoenix and her fate as such as part of the X-Men mythos, but I refer to the actual storyline that began this concept, not the concept itself.
The magic of the comic saga was that Jean Grey was slowly and ever so subtley manipulated for a year until she gave in to her dark hunger.

Phoenix finally freed herself of Mastermind's control, but was unable to prevent the dark side of Grey's personality with the full power of the phoenix-force behind it, from overwhelming her, not having had the training necessary to repress it.
When Phoenix committed suicide, it was acting exactly as Grey herself would have done under the circumstances, since it had endowed itself with an exact copy of Grey's personality.

Dark Phoenix confirmed for X3 Screenwriter Simon Kinburg is interviewed at Now Playing and pretty much confirms that the third X-men movie will include the Dark Phoenix storyline -- like we all didn't know already.
I realize that Dark Phoenix was the obvious direction to take the films from X2's ending, but I kinda had my heart set on an adaptation first of "Days of Future Past." Somehow that story seems far more accessible to the general public than the cosmic scope of the Phoenix.
By the time of the DP saga in the books, readers already knew that there were alien races of all kinds, there was a Shi'ar Empire that the X-men had had contact with, etc.

DVD Verdict Review - X-Men: The Phoenix Saga   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Phoenix Saga was the ultimate comics epic: over-the-top cosmic superhero battles combined with a personal story of temptation, corruption, and eventual sacrifice and redemption.
In addition, these five episodes are not even the complete saga (Jean's Dark Phoenix phase and subsequent death are not covered here), so significant plot points are dropped and may seem inexplicable to the casual viewer.
Although the X-Men cartoon did adapt the Dark Phoenix part of the story (including Jean's death), this disc contains only the first five episodes of the beginning of the story arc (and many fans of the comic agree that the early part of the story is the weakest).
