  Dark Water (JAPAN 2002)
Anyone who's seen enough scary movies knows that some ghosts are just lost souls who need to be told to "go towards the light" or are perhaps in dire need of a proper burial to put their spirit at ease.
Dark Water is a very cathartic film and will probably have more of an emotional impact on viewers who come from divorced families themselves.
Dark Water is an engaging and emotional thriller with a low body count and high intellect.

Midnight Eye review: Dark Water (Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara, 2002, director: Hideo NAKATA)
Hideo Nakata understands the concept of the old building that is alive and chose to set his film Dark Water in this type of location: an old, moldy, concrete apartment building.
In the program for Dark Water he states, "If you were to ask me whether I love horror from the bottom of my heart, I would have to say no." But there's no denying that he excels at making creepy films, Dark Water included.

LVJeff Reviews: After the Fact 2002
The movie wraps itself in the guise of a dark and quirky comedy, but it isn't as quirky as it thinks it is and its comedy is generally mean-spirited, using largely stereotypical two-dimensional side characters to emphasize (with a capital "E") the lameness of the Texas boondocks world the protagonist (Jennifer Aniston) is trapped in.
The movie isn't horrible because it's so obviously non-serious, but just being wink-wink silly isn't enough to breathe life into it, especially when the special effects are bad and the writing is on auto-pilot, leading to one of the worst climaxes in filmdom.
The movie is quiet, subtly haunting, and presented as a puzzle, shifting from the present to several parts of the past without warning, while offering a mystery for the viewers to solve.

Based on a story by Koji Suzuki and directed by Hideo Nakata, it's inevitable that “Dark Water” should have much in common with “Ringu.” This time, the iconic dead little long-haired Japanese girl is Mitsuko (Mirei Oguchi), a sad little girl who met her watery end soon after her mother abandoned her.
Most of the scares of the movie rely upon Yoshimi's own intense fear, though “Dark Water” isn't as much of a slow-burner as “Ringu”: the ghost is revealed early on, in a series of gradually lengthening glimpses.
Without the right setting, “Dark Water” does tend to fall apart somewhat: the idea of having a dead body in a water tank supplying an apartment block is, retrospectively, much scarier than the idea of being stalked by the ghost of a dead child.

Dark Water (2002) - A Review by David Nusair
Dark Water marks Nakata's return to the horror genre, and while it's a bit too derivitive of the original Ringu (both films are based on books by the same author), the movie remains somewhat compelling due mostly to his inventive direction.
From the clinical look of Yoshimi's office to the apartment's dank and dreary ambience, Nakata's strongest suit is clearly his ability to establish a tone that's both creepy and off-putting; there's not a single location in the film that's particularly inviting.
But too many elements in Dark Water were put to better effect in Ringu, including the whole water motif and the use of a little girl with long hair as an object of terror.

Dark Water is Japanese horror auteur Hideo Nakata's return to the genre after his Ring cycle made you too scared to watch television ever again.
A water leak from the supposedly abandoned apartment above gets bigger and bigger, a child's satchel reappears even though Yoshimi throws it away several times, and she is haunted by the image of a child wearing a yellow mackintosh who bears a striking resemblance to a young girl who disappeared several years before.
The story of the movie is rather orginial, however the overall story line downplays the excitement and general suspense that you would expect in a horror movie.

Dahlia begins to wonder if her mind is playing tricks on her - but there is definitely something in the water, and the building's secrets, so far emerging only in a trickle, are soon to come pouring out in a deluge that threatens to overwhelm mother and daughter alike.
The effect of déjà vu is all the stronger, however, because 'Dark Water' is in fact a remake of a Japanese film, refashioning for western eyes what has already been seen in Hideo Nakata's Honogurai mizu no soko kara/Dark Water (2002).

Dark Water is, partly due to this, a rather non-visual film: the threatening meaning of a child’s little red bag, out of context, doesn’t carry across to screenshots.
But that is part of the mystery and power of this movie: the safest, most ordinary of objects are imbued with inherent evil, and so it follows for the places where most people feel secure: their own bathroom, their own hall corridor, their child’s kindergarten.

Dark Water continues Nakata's ability of unsettling audiences with little devices.
It lacks the depth of Ringu and the epilogue's search for a greater significance is a little plodding and out of place, but it is still an effective ghost story that is a painfully slow at times but only serves to make it genuinely unnerving and creepy throughout.

At the beginning of Dark Water, Dahlia (Jennifer Connelly), accompanied by her young daughter, Ceci (Ariel Gade), is given a tour of what may be the single cruddiest apartment building the characters in a Hollywood thriller have ever been forced to occupy.
The elevator is a lurching steel box, and the residential unit, with its blocky claustrophobic chambers, corroded fake-wood cabinets, and rotten fl water spot on the ceiling, is about as inviting as a flophouse for crackheads.
Dahlia, who is in the middle of a bitter custody battle, has no money and no career (she gets a job pushing papers at an X-ray clinic), and she needs to live in a place that's close to a decent public school.

Pushing the edge of PG-13 with regard to scary scenes and family tensions, DARK WATER's greatest strength is Jennifer Connelly.
On one level, this seems funny (or ironic), that he lawyer is so unable to bring order to her nightmare; on the other hand, his inability to help suggests that Dahlia is abandoned, much as she has feared since she was a child.
