 About Darkover
Bradley felt that the essence of the Darkover novels was the clash between Darkovan and Terran cultures, and didn't originally intend to write about other periods.
After repeated requests from fans, Bradley filled in Darkover's early centuries with the saga of how the planet's inhabitants evolved a non-technological culture ruled by telepaths, weaving an increasingly complex tapestry of wars fought with telepathic weapons and the tyranny of selective breeding to reinforce the mental powers of the great families.
The women in the Darkover novels are strong, rational, capable human beings, who both suffer under oppression and rebel effectively against it.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on The Bloody Sun at Epinions.com
The Bloody Sun was Marion Zimmer Bradley’s first adult novel in the Darkover series, which is probably why she decided to rewrite this particular book in 1979 in order to make it more consistent with the world she had created and to set the book more firmly into the series that had evolved.
To do this she wove in a tragic end to the story from her then most recent novel The Forbidden Tower written in 1977 and tied those sad events into this book to add more depth and background to what was originally a mostly standalone one off novel.
I have had a long relationship with the Darkover series and there has been an obvious lack of good support from the publisher and some poorly thought out reprints.

She's taken an interesting approach to the internal consistency of the series: If she later decides that she earlier wrote something badly (which happens early in your carrer), she feels free to ignore those portions which she would do differntly now.
This can frustrate readers that keep a close eye on the internal logic of a series, but it does free the author to write better stories when her writing skills have improved.
And as you can see, while Darkover forms a large portion of her work it is by no means all.
