Darlington Generating Station produces electricity with heat created by nuclear fission using natural uranium fuel.
Selected for its excellent bedrock for station foundations, abundant supply of cooling water from Lake Ontario and good transportation access, the 485 hectare (1200 acre) Darlington site is also close to electrical customers in the province of Ontario.

The Canadian Nuclear FAQ - Section C: Cost and Benefits
Darlington is Ontario Power Generation's (OPG's) newest and largest nuclear station, providing about 20% of Ontario's electricity supply (the equivalent of about 2 million homes), or about CDN$1 billion per year worth of electricity at an arbitrary market price of $0.04/kWh.
Nuclear power is a much cleaner option than fossil fuels, for instance, since nuclear plants emit zero greenhouse gases, acid gases, and particulate air pollution.
Darlington was designed and built by Ontario Power Generation (then Ontario Hydro), and brought into service between 1990 and 1993 at a final cost of CDN$14.5 billion (1993 dollars).

 Pickering Nuclear Power Plant
The Pickering Nuclear Power Plant, located in Pickering, Ontario on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, is one of the world's largest nuclear generating facilities and consists of two generating stations, each having four CANDU( CAN adian D euterium U ranium) reactor units.
The plant also has a very large wind turbine to the west of it, however, the wind generator provides a fraction of the power of the nuclear reactor, which, when operational, can produce upwards of 5000 Megawatts.
The facility generates enough power to serve a city of two million people.

The Software Shutdown System at Darlington
The Darlington Nuclear Generating Station near Toronto, Canada has two independent and automated shutdown systems: one to drop neutron-absorbing rods into the core, the other to inject liquid poison into the moderator.
The actual operation of the plants (Darlington 2 since 1989) has not resulted in the revelation that the software safety systems are faulty.
Formal methods were used to convince the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada (AECB) that the software was indeed acceptable and met specifications.

The Canadian Nuclear Workers Council (CNWC) is an organization of workers represented by unions or other employee groups working in various areas of Canada's nuclear industry, including electric power utilities, the uranium mining and processing industry and in nuclear research.
As people whose daily working life is spent on the front lines of the Canadian nuclear industry, the firm belief of Canadian nuclear workers is that nuclear energy is a safe, economical and environmentally clean method of electricity production.
These international scientific authorities oversee not only the safety of nuclear power operations throughout the world, but also the spread of knowledge and understanding of nuclear technology.

Darlington's 4 reactors idled for safety checks
All four units of the Darlington nuclear generating station have been taken out of service for several weeks as the plant undergoes required safety checks.
Darlington's four reactors combined churn out about 3,500 megawatts of power, or enough to supply 15 per cent of the province's needs on a day of high demand.
Darlington is owned and operated by the provincial government's Ontario Power Generation Inc., or OPG.

 Electric Energy On-Line, News
OPG’s Darlington nuclear generating station continued to perform well, with a net capacity factor of 92 per cent during the third quarter.
By Monday August 18, 2003, about 85 per cent of available capacity was reconnected to the transmission system, including all four units at OPG’s Darlington nuclear generating station.
By Friday August 15, 2003, about 60 per cent of our generating capacity, including our hydroelectric stations, a significant portion of fossil capacity and some nuclear capacity, had returned to service.

Crew Systems Solutions : Abstract : Darlington Annunciation: User Information Needs, Current Experience and Improvement Priorities
The Darlington Nuclear Generating Station (DNGS) is located approximately 40 kilometers east of Toronto, Ontario on the coast of Lake Ontario.
At Darlington, as in most other industrial enterprises, the plant annunciation systems play a key role in supporting operations staff in supervising and controlling plant operations to achieve both safety and production objectives.
The station was designed and is operated by Ontario Hydro and provides electricity to meet the commercial, industrial and residential needs for 3 million people.

 OPG fact sheet
Darlington Nuclear Generating Station alone is capable of providing about 20 per cent of Ontario's electricity needs.
OPG also operated Bruce A and Bruce B nuclear generating stations until May 2001 when they were leased to Bruce Power L.P. Nuclear power stations currently provide about 38% of electricity generated by OPG.
Pickering A station went into service in 1971 and continued to operate safely until 1997 when it was placed in voluntary lay-up as part of OPG's nuclear improvement program.

Nuclear Report Card: Ontario's Reactors are Minimally Acceptable (1)
Station activities are not effectively managed to ensure that plant operation and configuration conform to design bases and remain within the bounds of analyzed conditions.
Generally OHN employees, especially managers (who are charged with stating what work will be done, when, and how) are sufficiently acquainted with the differing standards and "conduct of" requirements in the nuclear industry.
It is a combination of the nuclear safety, production and environmental aspects of nuclear power generation without regard to cost.

Cost Disadvantages of Expanding the Nuclear Power Industry
And, by accelerating the construction schedule for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, against the advice of the Select Committee on Ontario Hydro Affairs, Premier Davis has indicated that Ontario is also willing to become a power cow to be milked by the United States.
However, just as the Ontario cabinet on an earlier occasion exempted the Darlington nuclear station from environmental hearings required under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, so now these power exports are to be undertaken without any detailed environmental assessment.
Nuclear power contributes three times as much primary energy, but since more than two thirds of this energy is wasted, it is not reflected in these figures.

Nuclear Sunset: Economic Costs of the Canadian Nuclear Industry
Darlington had pushed the utility's debt to $35 billion, and it was inevitable that Ontario Hydro would again question its massive subsidy to AECL, at a time when it was encouraging the voluntary retirement of many of its own nuclear engineering staff.
With nuclear industry supporters firmly entrenched in the government bureaucracy, there is little doubt that this review will support ongoing (if somewhat reduced) government subsidies for the Canadian nuclear industry.
Nuclear Sunset uses a higher real discount rate of 9.7%, which is equivalent to a nominal [ 14 ] discount rate of 15.0% over the 1952-1995 time frame.
