Darlington transistor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In electronics, the Darlington transistor is a semiconductor device which combines two bipolar transistors in tandem (often called a "Darlington pair") in a single device so that the current amplified by the first is amplified further by the second transistor.
The idea of putting two or three transistors on a single chip was patented by him, but not the idea of putting an arbitrary number of transistors, which would cover all modern ICs.
A Darlington pair is sufficiently sensitive to respond to the small current passed by your skin and it can be used to make a touch-switch.

Transistor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The transistor is considered by many to be one of the greatest inventions in modern history, ranking in importance with inventions such as the printing press, the automobile and the telephone.
Transistorized circuits are replacing electromechanical devices for control of appliances and machinery as well, because it is often less expensive and more effective to simply use a standard integrated circuit and write a computer program to carry out the same mechanical task using electronic control than to design an equivalent control function mechanically.
Subsequently, transistors and other components and their necessary wiring were integrated into a single, mass-manufactured component: the integrated circuit.

The Darlington transistor pair may be configured to generate an output signal in response to an input signal.
The first common-base transistor may be coupled between the Darlington transistor pair and the output signal.
Such a Darlington pair configuration may further reduce the impedance presented to the base of the transistor Q22'such that a higher output breakdown voltage of the circuit 300 may be attainable when compared to conventional approaches.

 Darlington Pair Transistor Breadboard Project
When a single transistor is used in the circuit, as seen earlier, the LDR has to be completely covered before the LED lights.
This is because the circuit lacks sensitivity as the current into the base of the transistor is quite weak.
A darlington pair is needed to amplify the current and this is achieved by the first transistors emitter feeding into the base of the second transistor.

 Darlington transistor - Patent 4136355
The Darlington transistor comprising a first transistor of smaller output, i.e., a driving transistor Tr1 and a second transistor, i.e., an output transistor Tr2 of larger output, connected by their collectors in common and by the emitter of the first transistor Tr1 to the base of the second transistor Tr2.
In the first transistor Tr1, the base electrode 16 is formed in an opening in the emitter electrode 15, and the emitter electrode 15 is formed in a manner that at least an extended part 15' of it contacts the base region 17' of the second transistor Tr2.
In manufacturing process of the Darlington transistor of this example, the obstruction region 201 and the auxiliary obstruction region 20' are formed by a separate diffusing step from that of forming the emitter regions 13 and 13'.

The Darlington is required to multiply the op-amp output current to the desired output level.
The pass transistors are paralleled to permit higher output currents than would be possible with a single pass element.
In this case, all high current wiring should be from the bridge output to this capacitor and the collector of the pass transistor and from the emitter of the pass transistor to R4, R5 and the output connector.

 Transistors
Transistor is a solid-state electronic device composed of semiconductor material, such as germanium, silicon, etc., that controls current flow without the use of a vacuum.
Transistors are similar in function to electron tubes, but have the advantage of being compact, long-lived, and low in power requirements.
Field-effect transistor (FET), is a type of transistor that has its output controlled by an electric field and is used to amplify a signal.

 Bipolar Junction Transistors
High power bipolar transistors are conceptually the same as the bipolar transistors described in chapter 8.
The Thyristor has a lower on-state voltage than the Darlington pair and typically requires an even smaller turn-on current, which only needs to be applied temporarily because of the internal positive feedback between the two transistors of the equivalent circuit.
Furthermore, since both transistors are in saturation in the on state, a significant amount of minority carriers are accumulated in the base region of each transistor.

This gives it high current (The amount by which the revenue of a business exceeds its cost of operating) gain (commonly written β), and takes up less space than using two discrete transistors in the same configuration.
It has more phase shift at high frequencies than a single transistor, and hence can become unstable with negative (The process in which part of the output of a system is returned to its input in order to regulate its further output) feedback much more easily.

Darlington transistor arrangement - Patent 4905069
In the particular embodiment described in the specification, a Darlington transistor arrangement has a stepped upper surface with an emitter terminal of the preceding transistor disposed at the bottom of a groove formed between spaced raised portions on which the collector terminal and the emitter terminal of the transistor are located.
Moreover the surface on which the base terminal is located is disposed outside the collector and emitter terminal locations on the transistor body and the surface at which the emitter terminal of the preceeding transistor is situated is located between the surfaces at which the collector terminal and the emitter terminal are situated.
Where these four terminals, B, C, E and BO, of a Darlington transistor are arranged on the upper surface of a Darlington transistor body which is joined at its lower surface to a heat sink body, an arrangement of the type shown in FIGS.

Thus, the base of the output Darlington stage is near 0 and the output Darlington transistor is off (open).
Thus, in the arrangement in Figure #1a, the presence of a conductive fluid between probe points A and B causes the output transistor to turn on.
Aside from the logic inversion, there is a possible advantage in the arrangement in Figure #1b in that by having one of the probe terminals at ground, one can simply ground the vessel holding the fluid and then run only the B lead to detect the level as shown in Figure #2.

 Transistor Circuits
When a transistor is saturated the collector current Ic is determined by the supply voltage and the external resistance in the collector circuit, not by the transistor's current gain.
A transistor can also be used to enable a chip connected to a low voltage supply (such as 5V) to switch the current for an output device with a separate higher voltage supply (such as 12V).
If the transistor is switching a load with a coil, such as a motor or relay, remember to add a protection diode across the load.

One easy way for this is to use a npn transistor emitter grounded and collector to two resistors in series to 12V.

When using these types of devices, one potential problem is the relatively poor ability of the Darlington pair to pull the "on voltage" near the rail.
Because the output transistor in a Darlington is never driven hard into saturation, the output is only pulled within 1.2–2.5 V of the rail, depending on I
Darlington outputs are widely used in industry and although they are versatile, they do have limitations.
