Picard noticed that Dathon repeatedly uses the phrase "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" but he does not understand who or what they were.
Darmok and Jalad were two legendary travelers, strangers who faced and defeated a common enemy on the island of Tanagra.
Picard recites a story from Earth, very similar to that of Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra, about Gilgamesh and Enkidu at Uruk.

I must confess that I didn't figure out what "Darmok and Jilad at Tanagra" meant much before we were told, but that's mostly because I wasn't hearing it as an "and Jilad", but rather as an "Anjilad", which caused major confusion.

What "Darmok" did that was worth noting for me, despite its simplicities and the way action and explanation often move at a snail's pace on TNG, was to reference the story of Gilgamesh.
"Darmok" was a class-act episode; the actor who played the alien had the most expressive face and conveyed a complex and sympathetic personality in so few words and gestures.
Actually the Darmok _language_ (as a language) seemed pretty amenable to the UT. But Darmok ideas about appropriate modes of communication was what stymied the mostly human crew of the Enterprise.

"Darmok" is an episode from the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which the Enterprise encounters an alien race, the Children of Tama, whose language has so far eluded human comprehension.
When "Darmok" first came out, someone on the Fidonet Trek echo suggested that the reference might be to the fact that frozen rivers can be crossed.
Darmok of Kaza, a hunter, sails alone to the island continent Tanagra, where he meets Jalad of Ikiteo, of whom we know nothing.

I was never a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation (I'm a Deep Space Nine man myself), so I hadn't heard of the invented language that was used in the episode "Darmok" until now; you can find out what little there is to know about it here.
The salient aspect is that it seems to be made up entirely of allusions, and while this may be impractical, it's original and thought-provoking.
I remember that when the Darmok episode first aired a friend speculated that the concept came from a similar story from ancient Greece.

In the aftermath, James took a four month shoreleave to morn her loss and eventually returned to the Darmok as a changed man. He has now become more involved in his work with the special forces team, which he is now in command of, and became more involved in his work than ever before.
Upon his return to the Darmok, James was much more sedate and eventually accepted a transfer within the SEF to become their advisor to Starfleet Command instead of their Commanding Officer to allow James to follow his career in Starfleet instead of the SEF and Starfleet Intelligence.
During the recent Vulcan Secession Crisis, James was part of the team from the USS Darmok that infiltrated to the planet and released the Vulcan High Council from their captivity.

The Enterprise has the difficult assignment of opening up relations with a mysterious alien race known as the Tamarians, or the Children of Tamar.
Dathon does know English but speaks in strange, disjointed descriptions of alien events, such as "Darmok and Jilad at Tenagra" or "Unzani, his fist closed".
I enjoy SF stories that involve solving some sort of puzzle or enigma and "Darmok" is such a tale.

My friend's father is a professor of English, and he plays the "Darmok and Jalad" episode in one of his lectures, in order to study language and metaphor.
Khan met Chekov before he and his genetically enhanced crewmates were abandoned on Seti Alpha V, but it was not an on-camera moment.
But the Darmok episode of Next Gen is one of my favorites.
