Furthermore, a key battle of the Earth-Romulan War was the Battle of Cheron, mentioned in the TNG episode The Defector.
In the TOS episode "The Naked Time", Psi 2000 was in the midst of a planetary break up which caused strange gravity fluctuations that warped space and time and caused the crew of the Enterprise to go mad.

As this episode opens, Picard is briefing the crew on their new mission.
The episode then follows two strands - in one, Riker and the remaining crew attempt to both recover Picard and establish communications with the Tamarians, while in the second Picard must deal with the alien Captain.
When I first watched Darmok, I was utterly convinced that Picard or Riker would eventually modify the phase induction coils on a universal translator or some such thing, whereupon all the Tamarians would start speaking perfect english.

 47 (number) Information
In the TNG episode "Darmok," Worf reports a particle gradient of 4/7.
In the Voyager episode "Non Sequitur," Harry Kim lives in apartment 4-G, G being the seventh letter of the alphabet.
The intentionality of this reference to 47 was confirmed by Brannon Braga, the writer of that episode [1].

The Tamarian captain, after a brief and heated discussion with his first officer about "Darmok and Jilad at Tanagra," beams off his bridge-and Picard is beamed off the Enterprise at the same time.
Both ships trade shots several times, and the Enterprise is close to destruction, but Picard manages to communicate the facts of the situation enough to the Tamarian first officer that both sides leave peacefully; not necessarily as friends, but certainly not as enemies.

Picard noticed that Dathon repeatedly uses the phrase "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra" but he does not understand who or what they were.
Darmok and Jalad were two legendary travelers, strangers who faced and defeated a common enemy on the island of Tanagra.

 languagehat.com: Comment on DARMOK REVISITED.
Applying an analysis that faults the episode based on internal sf logical faults is the equivalent of dismissing the episode due to the premise of faster-than-light drive.
The episode is not merely baked, it is a triumph of he souffle-maker's art.
And if faster-than-light drive had been thought up specifically for one episode of Star Trek and been hailed as a brilliant invention and people kept writing about what a great idea it was, it would be perfectly in order to devote similar care to pointing out that it was impossible.

Ex Astris Scientia - TNG Season 5
By putting the viewer in the role of the suppressed minority, the episode even stresses the demand for sexual tolerance, as it may be a matter of interpretation what is "normal" and what is not.
This episode is very amusing and it skillfully combines the dispute between Worf and Alexander with that between Lwaxana and her future husband Campio.
While the main plot of "The Taming of the Shrew" in the TOS episode was a bit silly (albeit amusing), it's the Ferengi involvement in the TNG episode.

 Universal translator Information
As a convention, it is used to remove the problem of translating between alien languages, unless that problem is essential to the plot.
To do this in every episode when a new species or culture is encountered would consume time (especially when most of these shows have a half to one hour format) normally allotted for plot development and potentially (across many episodes) become repetitive to the point of annoyance.
The TNG episode "Darmok" also illustrates another instance where the universal translator proves ineffective and unintelligible, because it is too deeply rooted in local metaphor to communicate ideas.

[Episode number: 101 ``Darmok'' Stardate: 45047.2] The Enterprise is in the El'A'Drel system to meet with the Tamarians, a race which seems peaceful, but have been described as ``incomprehensible'' in past encounters.
The Tamarian cap- tain, after a brief and heated discussion with his first officer about ``Darmok and Jilad at Tanagra,'' beams off his bridge-and Picard is beamed off the En- terprise at the same time.
``Darmok, and Jilad...'' says Dathon with resignation, ``at Tanagra.'' Picard then takes the knife, realizing that the problem is not with Dathon.

The premise of this episode is occasionally compared favorably to the motion picture Enemy Mine, which may have inspired it.

 Tim Lynch's Review of Darmok
The Tamarian captain, after a brief and heated discussion with his first officer about "Darmok and Jilad at Tanagra", beams off his bridge--and Picard is beamed off the Enterprise at the same time.
It also has many meanings--but the meanings for a particular planet combine nicely ("Darmok" is a mythical hunter-hero, and "Tanagra" is a mythical island).
I must confess that I didn't figure out what "Darmok and Jilad at Tanagra" meant much before we were told, but that's mostly because I wasn't hearing it as an "and Jilad", but rather as an "Anjilad", which caused major confusion.

When Star Trek TNG began, it had a large cast and over the time it had on the air, the cast began to gel and often did good ensemble shows.
When TNG began as films, for reasons I would guess as a studio suggestion, a film has to have a "star" or name actor to lead the film and boost box office numbers on opening weekend.
The strength of TNG TV series was the use of the whole cast.

And for once, TNG avoided its too-common "rushed ending" problem, and had the fifth act as the *best* one of the episode.
As with "Darmok", I'm not sure the problem was hugely in the writing, so much as in Frakes's playing of it.

Even today, over 16 years since the first TNG episode, I realize they were pretty well done (well at least 2nd season on) and a lot of them dealt with deep philosophical and political philosophy issues that still intrigue me.
Damn, TNG was a good show, since I think an argument could reasonably be made for a dozen or so episodes, many of which have already been named.
Although upon reflection I would place episodes with Ashley Judd highly because she was hawt in the uniform.

"Darmok" is an episode from the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which the Enterprise encounters an alien race, the Children of Tama, whose language has so far eluded human comprehension.
Darmok of Kaza, a hunter, sails alone to the island continent Tanagra, where he meets Jalad of Ikiteo, of whom we know nothing.
"Darmok" is one of the best-crafted episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and probably the most impressive premise the show has ever had.

 Tenser, said the Tensor: "Darmok"
At the end of the episode, in fact, the first officer orders his ship to warp out of orbit with "Mirab, with sails unfurled", which is used several times in the episode to mean something like 'go'.
Another weakness in the episode is that the only reason the crew of the Enterprise are able to start puzzling out what the Children of Tama are saying is that, as near-human bumpyheads, they have familiar human gestures, facial expressions, and tones of voice.
It is one of the few episodes (and one of the few first-contact stories in general) that attempts to draw people’s attention to the language barrier that must be overcome in any first contact situation (human-human or human-alien).

Though previous episodes have explored the fact that Picard has foregone personal relationships in favor of his career, here he is forced to live a stable family life and, in so doing, finds out that not only is he good at it, but he likes it.
While Worf provides the episode's comic relief (until Riker starts toting around Data's head), it is Counselor Troi dealing with her inadequate abilities to command a cripple Starship and Captain Picard having to deal with a trio of frightened children that are the most interesting to watch during the episode.
We are then back to first episode with Q again insisting that humanity is not prepared for "what's out there." Instead of heading to Farpoint Station, this time the mountain comes to Mohammed, as Q snaps his fingers and transports the Enterprise to the far side of the galaxy where they encounter a Borg cube.
