Darrell Dean Johnson (August 25, 1928 - May 3, 2004) was an American Major League Baseball catcher, coach, manager and scout.
Johnson was born in Horace, Nebraska, and made his major league debut on April 20, 1952.
Johnson coached for the Cardinals (1960-61) before resuming his playing career, and also was a coach for the Orioles (1962), Red Sox (1968-69) and Rangers (1981-82).

On 19 January 1968 PFC Darrell Johnson's platoon was part of a company-size sweep in the tri-border area of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia about 10 miles west of Dak To in Kontum Province, South Vietnam.
Johnson's platoon was assigned rear guard during the withdrawal.
Johnson was carried as Missing in Action, and was promoted while in that status, until 20 February 1979, when a Presumptive Finding of Death was approved by the Secretary of the Army.

I remembered that his first name was Darrell, simply because that is my brother's name (only my brother spells his differently), and I remembered that he was from North Carolina, but I couldn't for the life of me remember her POW's last name.
I obviously couldn't request the same POW simply by asking for a "Darrell", no matter the spelling, so my only request was to be given a POW/MIA from the same state in which I live, North Carolina.
I know I'm very fortunate to not have lost family members or friends in Viet Nam, or Korea, but as strange as it may seem to you as you read this, I feel as though I know W. Darrell Johnson, and I feel that he was a part of my life.

Many thanks are owed to Darrell Johnson for contributing a book that will be helpful to the churches rather than merely the academy.
