Darrell Waltrip said he was "inadequately prepared" for the dramatic, emotional events in which he was immersed at the conclusion of last Sunday's Daytona 500.
Waltrip, making his debut as a NASCAR commentator for Fox, cheered his younger brother Michael Waltrip to victory in the closing laps, only to discover shortly afterward that old friend and former rival Dale Earnhardt —; Michael's car owner — had died of injuries suffered in a crash on the final lap.
Darrell retired last year, at the end of his 28th season, with three championships and 84 victories, one of the greatest careers in NASCAR history.

Waltrip was not able to carry his success of the previous year into 1990.
Darrell Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt were close friends, and the finish of the 2001 race was a very emotional one for him, as he was torn between joy over seeing his brother take the win and concern over Earnhardt's condition.
