ASEE PRISM - Apr 1999 - On Campus: Spicing Up the Curriculum
Bleuel, a University of California Ph.D. candidate, tells people, "I'm a cartoonist, but my hobby is nuclear engineering." His biweekly strip has been a fixture on the pages of the Daily Californian, the university's campus newspaper, since 1997.
Bleuel says that some characters and settings are based on real people and events, but others are the product of his imagination.
However, Dr. Goldfinger, the evil professor, is a composite of all the educators Bleuel has encountered in his 10 years of college, and the character is the epitome of their most annoying attributes.

Nukees - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nukees is a webcomic by Darren "Gav" Bleuel which focuses on the lives of a group of graduate students in the department of nuclear engineering (often abbreviated Nuc.E., whence the title) at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 2004, Darren Bleuel hosted a worldwide Random Bag of Fun, encouraging readers to mail in either gifts or else a donation of twenty dollars, so that they could then be mailed a random gift back.
While Cameo appearances are a common in webcomics, the frequency of cameos of both the character of Gav van Darin, and Nukees creator Darren 'Gav' Bleuel (whose real-life appearance is as striking as that of any comic character), has become a phenomenon unto itself, especially among Keenspot webcomics.

 Engineering News, February 21, 2005
Bleuel didn't know how to draw, but he could copy with the best of them, so copy he did: Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, anything he could get his hands on.
In January 1997, Bleuel published his first Nukees strip in the Daily Cal, and the "atomic comic" was born.
Some of the comic situations are culled from Bleuel's own experiences, such as living in Etcheverry for a month, harboring crushes on bartenders, and showing up at the wrong time for a midterm.

 Forefront Fall 2005
Bleuel knew the material was just waiting to be mined: comedy born from engineering students slaving away in the industrial environs of Etcheverry Hall, bent double under the demands of professors, pondering the nature of science over beers, and oh, the characters, the gloriously weird characters!
In January 1997, Bleuel published his first strip in the Daily Cal, and the “atomic comic” was born.
Now a health physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Bleuel spends about 10 hours a week writing and drawing the strip, published three times weekly on his website Keenspot, which is devoted to publishing web comics.

 Gav - CGWiki
Darren Bleuel, author/creator of the KeenSpot comic "Nukees" and one of the four main partners in KeenSpot.
Gav is the name of the main character of Nukees, and also a race in the comic "Schlock Mercenary" by Howard Tyler.
The race was created by the introduction of Gav (either from Nukees or Darren himself?) into a wormhole-based apparatus that duplicated him an extremely large number of times.

Darren Bleuel went a little more high-tech, showing off his webcomic skills on another projection system.
I was stoked to field a few of the questions myself; being a newcomer to the pro comics field offered me a great opportunity to show the attendees what it's like to get your start.

Modern Humor Authority | Critical Review for the Post-Internet Age » Blog Archive » The Unbearable ...
One of Darren Bleuel’s profound strengths is his analytical abilities, no doubt stemming from his prior field of discipline as a theoretical physicist.
At first glance we witness a clash between science and faith, an argument long familiar to armchair practitioners of the debating arts (if they are able to be termed “arts” — how often they more resemble the mandibular gnashings of two American stag beetles attempting to secure purchase for their seed).
Indeed, via this tenuously-displayed construct, Bleuel has exposed himself as a diehard evangelist, in a fashion that may easily escape the attention of his no-doubt primarily-scientifically-minded audience.

Darren Bleuel, 32, is author of the comic strip, NUKEES, which has been published in the U.C. Berkeley student newspaper, The Daily Californian, as well as online since 1997.
Giving careful consideration to his options, he promptly decided that nuclear engineering was too easy a way to earn a living and switched to the hum-drum world of the internet.
After finding themselves extremely unsatisfied with their webhost, Chris and Darren banded together in an attempt to not only provide a better service, but to revolutionize the world of online comics.

Thinking that readers might appreciate catching up on missed strips, he posted them on the web at the same time, inadvertently becoming one of the first "webcartoonists." Years later, in 2000, he helped start the world's first and largest webcomic publishing company, Keenspot Comics.

Howard Taylor of Schlock Mercenary fame moderated, and at various points Scott Kurtz heckled from the back of the room.
Incidentally, the character Gav from Schlock Mercenary does look just like Darren Bleuel who does Nukees.
Best quote from the panel was when Howard Taylor was obliquely talking about financial numbers and Darren Bleuel mentioned that Howard was being very conservative in the projections.

When I visualize a webcomic I want to create in my head (and, let's be honest, that's as close to me creating another webcomic as I'm going to get), the art style that I've magically become capable of for that webcomic is somewhere between Shaenon Garrity's in Narbonic and Darren Bleuel's in Nukees.
Yes, I know all the good and fine reasons to use a computer for shading (or coloring), but it's not what brought me to the comic strip dance.

Also, Darren's signing the comic upside down in the panel talking about chaos was another fun touch.)
