Darth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Contrary to popular belief, the word "Darth" is neither a Dutch nor German word meaning "dark" (donker and dunkel, respectively), although "Vater" is Dutch (or German) for "father".
The first Darth using an alias instead of her own name was probably Darth Traya, followed by her pupils Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion.
Because the first recorded Sith to use the title were Darth Revan and Darth Malak, the fact that they derived much of their power from the Star Forge, a creation of the long-extinct Rakata, has led some historians to suggest that "Darth" is actually a corruption of the Rakatan word Daritha, meaning "emperor".

Jedi Council Forums - Was Sidious REALLY Darth Plagueis' apprentice?
Darth Plagueis was supposed to be a "Sith Legend" that the jedi could have possibly known about, now if that's the case and the "legend" of Darth Plagueis is true, then that means that Plagueis would have had to have been around at least a millenium before the events of TPM.
But people keep argueing over the age of Darth Sidious....some people insist on believing that he's only in his sixties while others (myself included) believe that he's "at least" a couple of hundred years old, but this Darth Plagueis story would require him to be even older than that.
Plagueis was real, and in the original script Sidious admits that he killed him in his sleep.

Darth Plagueis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Darth Plagueis was a Munn Sith Lord who, according to legend, had discovered a way to manipulate midi-chlorians to prevent death and create life.
The English root for Plagueis' Sith title is "plague." The name may also take inspiration from the English heretic Pelagius, who thought that souls could be saved from damnation by their own will alone, rather than relying upon the grace of a deity.
The cybernetics used as to support General Grievous and later, in a cruel twist of fate, Darth Vader, could be viewed as a way of "creating life." Indeed, Palpatine never promises that in order to stop death, one does not also have to become a machine.

Transformers Forever - So did Palpatine lie to Anakin about the power of Darth Plagueis ? [SPOILERS]
In Ep3, Palpatine tantalizes Anakin with the tale of Darth Plagueis the Wise who supposedly had the power to force the midichlorians to create life/sustain life.
Also for those that dont like the fact that Anakin was birthed by the Force, one could postulate that Plagueis did INDEED have this power, and for whatever reasons, deemed Shmi to be the mother and used his power to create Anakin within her and also wiped her memories clean of the event.
So it could well be that Plagueis creates Anakin and wipes Shmi's memory and leaves her to raise the child for a time until he comes to claim him.

Life" I do not think it is a stretch to say that Darth Sidious' Master, (we all know he was the apprentice that killed him in his sleep), influenced the midi-chlorians to conceive Anakin.
Darth Plagueis never told his apprentice, Sidious, whom he created using the midi-chlorians, and so Sidious was hell-bent on finding out just who, because he realized that he would be The Chosen One, the most powerful being in the universe.
Darth Sidious found out about Shmi and so knew what he needed to know, and since Darth Plagueis was not about to teach him more, He murdered him in his sleep.

Anakin on the other hand, was conceived without a father and was supposed to be the chosen one, the one who would bring balance to the force.
In so doing, moving past to Episode VI, it was actually Anakin/Darth Vader who killed Darth Sidious, avenged the death of Darth Plagueis, his creator, and eventually bringing out balance to the Force as prophesized.

Maybe he is "a legend" (in the "he's a hero") sense of the word, but not in the sense of a really old story passed on from generation to generation mixing fiction with fact.
There may not even BE such a person as "Darth Plagueis." The point is that it was a story told to Anakin in order to get him interested in the Sith and what they could do for him.
The only part that we know is for real true in the legend of Darth Plagueis is that he was indeed Sidious's master, and Sidious indeed killed him in his sleep (the sound of the lightsaber igniting would wake him up, so no he wouldn't have used his lightsaber to kill him).

So I would think that eliminates Darth Plagueis as the creator unless it happened just before EP I. That leaves the Emperor and the force.
