DARTINGTON lies inside a great bend of the Dart, from which its name is derived, and was part of the possessions of the Martins from the early 12th century onwards.
The Duke made Dartington his principal seat in Devon, and the present Hall may be regarded for the most part as his work.
The old church of Dartington, which stood beside the Hall, was demolished in 1873, except the tower.

Dartington is a historic place and well worth a couple of hours spent browsing the shops and looking at the sights.

When I joined Dartington on 4th November 1962 she was in Hong Kong along with Woodbridge Haven and 6 other sweepers from the 6th MSS plus Mahamiru (M 1127), the Malaysian Navy ton class.
Dartington's refit period in Singapore was during April/May 1963 but we had a lucky break when due for our docking.
On some occasions on Dartington by the time we had refuelled it was too late/dark to proceed up river and we were stuck there until the next morning when we moved up river at first light.

 Dartington Morris Men - The Dartington Mummer's Play
The local version of the Mummers' Play now revived by the Dartington Morris Men was known to have been performed some 120 years ago by "The Christmas Boys" of Dartington.
The script that Willie and Albert wrote down was deposited in the library of Cecil Sharp House (the London home of the English Folk Dance and Song Society) in 1948 but unfortunately was removed from the files there.
Fortunately someone who was collecting folk plays had written it down in his notebook and eventually it made its way back to Dartington.
