Dartmoor is a National Park in the centre of the English county of Devon.
Dartmoor differs from other National Parks in England and Wales, in that since a 1985 Act of Parliament much of it has been designated as 'Access Land', with no restrictions on where walkers can roam.
Dartmoor, an eerie place even in high summer, abounds with myths and legends, some of which are detailed in Myths and Legends of Dartmoor[?].

Dartmoor is one of the last great wildernesses remaining in the United Kingdom and fortunately part of it lies within my constituency.
Although the national park authority, in conjunction with the commoners council and the Dartmoor Preservation Association, has done a sterling job in preserving and conserving the landscape, flora and fauna, the military's record is not quite as impressive, certainly if the activities of recent months are anything to go by.
The Ramblers Association and the Dartmoor Preservation Association have also recommended avoidance, and I hope that that will be significant in allowing the rehabilitation of that area of Dartmoor as speedily as possible.

 Stop the Dartmoor "Super-quarry"
The Dartmoor Preservation Association are organising a second "day of action" to try and stop the proposed superquarry.
This time the DPA are hoping to focus on the numerous archaeological sites which will be destroyed.
It is the opinion of the DPA that a rescue plan could be made financially viable for such a large and archaeologically rich area only through pursuing an inappropriate and ruthless sampling strategy, discarding generally accepted methods of investigation and standards of recording.

The Ramblers’ Association (RA) has won a battle to save a public bridleway on Dartmoor.
It was announced on July 28 that the path, near the village of Throwleigh in the parish of South Tawton, northern Dartmoor, will remain open after a landowner’s bid to close it to the public was rejected.
But the RA, along with other organisations including the Dartmoor Preservation Association, the Open Spaces Society and the Byways and Bridleways Trust, objected to the move.

This follows a long campaign by the Council for National Parks (1) and the Dartmoor Preservation Association (2) to stop quarrying extensions into the National Park, which would have caused significant damage to the landscape, including a site of international archaeological importance.
The Dartmoor National Park Authority had been waiting for a new environmental assessment to be submitted on the impact of these old consents.
Both CNP and the Dartmoor Preservation Association had asked the companies to consider giving up the consents voluntarily, to bring them into line with modern environmental standards and because of the bad publicity their plans had attracted.

The inspector also considered a number of other issues (safety, magnetic radiation, driver distraction, etc) but dismisses them on the basis that they are resolved by the Companion Guide to PPS22 and that "… in the event, they would prove unfounded"
The inspector notes that "… the historic environment is all-pervading and cannot, in practice, be preserved unchanged." And that the site "… is a landform which, in my estimation, would be able to absorb turbines of the height and number proposed without enduring harm."
