The beginning of the 50th anniversary year of the Dartmoor National Park sees the publication of an exciting new plan that will help the future of Dartmoor’s wildlife.
Produced by the Dartmoor National Park Authority on behalf of the Dartmoor Biodiversity Steering Group, Action for Wildlife: the Dartmoor Biodiversity Action Plan is an attractively designed, 200 page document setting out targets and actions for key species and habitats for the next 10 years in 20 detailed action plans.
In a full page foreword, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, as Duke of Cornwall, congratulates the National Park Authority and its partner organisations on producing the Action Plan and welcomes it as a means of assessing priorities and ensuring that the available resources are directed to the areas where they are most needed.

Dartmoor saw quite a lot of activity in the English Civil War of the 1640s and a cross above Fingle Bridge is traditionally said to mark the spot where a soldier was killed.
The reasons that members of the public enjoy Dartmoor are exactly the reasons why it provides such an ideal training area for the military - the challenging walking, the strenuous climb up the steep-sided valleys, the demanding, changeable climate, the featureless navigation, the remoteness, the lack of habitation and the support of the local people.
He cited the example of liaison with The Dartmoor Society, from which was developed a procedure for identifying archaeological artefacts (such as wedges for splitting rocks) during range clearance.

There were lines of rocks across the track to channel water; on the muni there would be little problem in ploughing over them, but on the 29er careful steering around the edges or between two rocks was vital.
The car park was on quite a steep hill, and required a tight turn to get to the car; the loose gravel, sharp turn and too much speed saw the wheel slide away from under me, sending me flying through the air.
In actual fact the speed and surface had nothing to do with it; the real reason was the group of thirty or so people having a picnic in the middle of the carpark who had all turned to watch.

 Youth Centre Project
A steering group was set up to focus on issue number 1.
This group looked in detail at existing services and developed a needs led integrated youth strategy that ensured existing services worked alongside any proposed youth provision so that young people accessed provision according to their level of need.
The group then visited the Phoenix Centre in Exeter, an established youth centre that has been successfully co-existed alongside a leisure centre, to better understand the implications of this embryo of an idea.

The large blue, the largest and most spectacular of Britain's blue butterflies, was found mainly in Somerset, the Cotswolds, Dartmoor and the coastal valleys of Devon and Cornwall, but became extinct in Britain in 1979.
Naturalists knew that the caterpillars fed on the flowers of wild thyme and were then carried underground by red ants, which were fooled by chemical and visual signs into thinking that they were ant grubs.

Once found throughout the counties of southwest England reaching as far east as the New Forest, the bog hoverfly has suffered a catastrophic decrease in range, and was thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1993.
It is now known from only a number of sites on Dartmoor in Devon (5).
Outside of Britain, this hoverfly has a broad distribution in northern and temperate areas of Europe (6).

People were invited to the first meeting of the group on 18th March at the 76 Club in Newton Abbot and it was agreed to call it the " Newton Area Cycling Group", and make it open to anyone who cycles or has an interest in cycling.
