  Darwen
Darwen formerly known as Over Darwen, now includes part of the former area known as Lower Darwen, Pickup and Yate Bank and Eccleshill.
The earliest industries at Darwen were farming, quarrying and later coal mining; but the population of those days was coparitively small, being only a few hundred people.
It is recorded at the begining of the 18th centuary that many of these were 'coal-getters', this improved form of fuel and industrial power being either cut from the near-surface seams or dug from pits.

Darwen, or Over Darwen, as it was called until 1879 was a Municipal Borough until 1974 when it joined into a new Authority with its neighbour, Blackburn.

Darwen Jubilee Tower stands to the west of the Town on the summit of Beacon Hill.

 Darwen Golf Club - Lady Members
Within two years of inception, Darwen Golf Club opened its doors to lady members and in 1895 it was recorded that there were twenty-four full lady members whose play and competitions were to be governed by the Club Council.
For a few years in the 1940s Darwen withdrew from E.L.L.G.A. but reapplied for membership in 1951 and was accepted in 1952.
It is her score of 71 which presently stands as the recorded course record for a Darwen lady player.

The Living Water Charitable Trust (LWCT), was requested to carry out an assessment of the watershed of the River Darwen, Lancashire with the aim of identifying the impacts affecting the river and find ways of addressing these with the ultimate aim of improving water quality.
We have noticed in the press that contamination of the beaches at Lytham and Blackpool continues to be a problem despite massive investment by United Utilities.
We suspect that some of this contamination is derived from the Darwen and some other rivers in the catchment.
