How it went from being the industry's most profitable airline in the 1980s to an inefficient, money-losing enterprise is an un-Darwinian tale of how one business and its employees were unable to alter their corporate DNA, and how it might be too late to do much about it.
In 1993, the airline filed a document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, in which it predicted that low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines would expand its operations to additional markets and that US Airways, with the highest operating costs in the industry, had to reduce its costs to survive.
The airline's slow slide began with Edwin Colodny, the man credited with making US Airways, or USAir as it was known at the time, profitable in the first place.

Queensland Airlines continued to carry on operations under that name, until the mid 1960’s, when it was then absorbed into the Ansett –ANA structure.
The following year the airline was renamed Airlines of South Australia, and continued to operate throughout South Australia, with a variety of aircraft types, until in 1986, following a State Government policy to de-regulate intrastate air routes, the then Ansett board members elected to terminate its operations.
During the 1974 cyclone disaster in Darwin, Ansett again came to the aid of Darwin residents, providing services and ground support, to assist in the evacuation of residents, while the city was rebuilt.

WHEN DAVID NEELEMAN was fired from Southwest Airlines, he lost what he thought was a "dream job." The person who had the unpleasant task of asking him to leave was Ann Rhoades.
When Neeleman started his own airline a few years later, he hired two of his colleagues from Southwest: John Owen as CFO and you guessed it, Rhoades as head of HR.
By contrast, leaders such as Colleen Barrett of Southwest Airlines, along with her leadership team, have created a culture of humility, one that springs from concern for others as a means of building a people-centric organization.
