The Best Case for ESP? (Generation sXeptic)
Daryl Bem was a psychologist of top academic and research merit convinced of the existence of psi, and had published a review of evidence in support of his conviction in a leading psychology journal.
Bem did not rise from his desk to greet me, and as I sat down and re-introduced myself, explaining the direction and topic of my column, I had the sense that he was evaluating me, assessing my motives with the trained eye of a psychologist.
Daryl Bem's research may stand as a major guidepost on the road to discovery, or go down in future decades as one of many promising findings never to be replicated nor confirmed.

Definition of Environment, choice, and sexual orientation
Daryl Bem, a social psychologist at Cornell University, has theorized that the influence of biological factors on sexual orientation may be mediated by experiences in childhood.
Bem theorizes that this physiological arousal will later be transformed into sexual arousal: children will become sexually attracted to the gender which they see as different ("exotic").
Proponents of the "choice about behavior" position point to taboo or illegal sexual acts, such as pedophilia or incest where society requires individuals not to act out their desires, as examples where choices are expected to be made whether or not orientation is a matter of choice.

 A Critique of Bem's E.B.E. Theory
Bem essentially reduces developmental psychology to a social deconstructionist view of sex, in which the ideas of heterosexuality as normal, and identification with one's own sex as normal, are deemed to be mere social constructs.
Bem builds his model almost exclusively on Bell, Weinberg amd Hammersmith's Sexual Preference: Its Development in Men and Women (1981), a study which claims to "once and for all" debunk the developmental and family factors linked to homosexuality.
Bem then reaches back for further supportive evidence of his E.B.E. theory to an 1887 reference explaining that "strong and vivid emotion" becomes associated with feelings of "love." He quotes a literary piece in which a man, trying to woo a woman, did so by killing her pet pigeons.

Daryl writes: "And as you know from my political postscript, I don't think it matters what the "causes" are, whether Chandler is right or I am right.
You, Daryl, in arguing that "they could still argue it's like schizophrenia", are misrepresenting the same data that demonstrates it is not a choice.
And I believe you are misrepresenting it because of your political ideology: You WANT the biology not to work because you want America to be forced to accept homosexuality even as a choice.

What Makes People Gay? - The Boston Globe
Critics of homosexuality have used Bem's theory, which stresses environment over biology, to argue that sexual orientation is not inborn and not fixed.
But Bem says this pathway is triggered by biological traits, and he doesn't really see how the outcome of homosexuality can be changed.
Bailey says whether or not Bem's theory holds up, the environment most worth focusing in on is the one a child experiences when he's in his mother's womb.

In a Ganzfeld experiment, a sender attempts to transmit an image to a receiver in sensory isolation; following the sending period, the receiver attempts to pick the correct image from a selection of candidates, generally four, one of which is the target.
According to Daryl Bem of Cornell University, results achieved across a number of Ganzfeld trials yielded a hit rate of around 35%, when random guessing ought to have produced results in the 25% range.
In Bem's article on the subject, he notes that the odds of achieving a 35% hit rate at random are over 1 billion to one.

Daryl Bem points out that how we believe what we believe can be difficult to extract from our thinking.
Holding a belief means that you perceive a relationship between two things or between something and its characteristics.
Bem talks about our "primitive beliefs," and he says that every belief we have can ultimately be dissected to the point where the information will rest on "a basic belief in the credibility of one's own sensory experience or upon a basic belief in the credibility of some external authority."
