Topic: Dash punctuation

Dash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A dash is a punctuation mark, and is not to be confused with the hyphen, which has quite different uses.
The em dash is used in much the way a colon or set of parentheses is used: it can show an abrupt change in thought or be used where a period is too strong and a comma too weak.
A spaced en dash is commonly used for this purpose in British publications, whereas in the USA the tendency is to use the unspaced em dash.

Punctuation can be thought of as a sign that warns the reader that he or she is approaching a change in direction in a sentence.
Similarly, punctuation in a sentence warns the reader that the flow of words ahead may shift in an unexpected direction.
Use a dash before and after an interrupting word, phrase, clause, or sentence when you want to give extra emphasis to the interrupting words or whenever the interrupting words contain words or phrases separated by commas.

 punctuation
Punctuation marks are written symbols that do not correspond to either phonemes (sounds) of a spoken language nor to lexemes (words and phrases) of a written language, but which serve to organize or clarify written language.
Also related are diacritical marks (or diacritics), which serve to distinguish among similar sounds using the same primary letter symbol, or to clarify emphasis or tone.
Some punctuation marks are similar to their equivalent Western ones, but larger, to suit the characters that surround the mark, for example, the Chinese commas (,) is larger than its Western counterpart.

David Porter's explanation focuses on gaps; he argues that the dash links two words in order to "carry the freight of at least eight or nine words that must be supplied silently" so the reader must "recover in his mind and not in the poem itself, the absent sense" (43, 44).
In addition to the linguistic, rhetorical, and poetic functions of experimental punctuation, the dash indicates the mental processing of ideas as the poet confronts the overwhelming internal stimulation resulting from her intellectual gifts.
Bracketed by dashes to indicate an internal thought, the word becomes encouragement, hinting that the solution will eventually be apparent.

I propose that Emily Dickinson was influenced by Lawrence Sterne's extensive use of varied dashes to indicate Lockean associations within the mind which defy the linear progression of ideas.
Similarly, for Dickinson, the dash represents the multiple avenues of thought inherent to genius and challenges the reader to puzzle through sophisticated metaphoric connections which are perhaps less obvious to our slower minds.

I acknowledge that dashes can be useful -- say, to add an example -- and are surely more emphatic than parentheses (without the sly sharing of confidence with the reader).
