Art dealers, architects and designers who helped create the freewheeling Dashanzi Art District, where artists can meet the masses, are planning to stage a festival to celebrate Beijing's emergence as a global cultural centre.
Dashanzi's celebration of contrasting cultures and living concepts "is the first independent arts festival ever to be held in Beijing," said Els Silvrants, a Dutch impresario who is helping put the show together.
Dashanzi was originally set up as a vast, centrally planned factory complex by Chinese and East German defence technicians in the 1950s.

The Cultural Heritage of China :: The Arts :: Museums and Galleries :: Dashanzi Art District
"Dashanzi Art District" (Chinese: 大山子艺术区; Pinyin: Dàshānzi Yìshùqū) is the informal name of a part of Dashanzi in the Chaoyang District of Beijing that houses a thriving artist community, among 50-year old decommissioned military factory buildings of unique architectural style.
The area is often called the 798 Art District or Factory 798 although technically, Factory #798 is only one of several structures within a complex formerly known as Joint Factory 718.
The Dashanzi factory complex was vacated at around the time when most of Beijing's contemporary artist community was looking for a new home.

supernaut ... i whore for art ... shanghai does contemporary art
Contemporary art in China is really mostly a scene in Beijing around 798 Factory, despite other cities having something going on, but for some reason when people ask me about it, there's this pervasive meme that Shanghai has a scene that rocks out.
Consider the Museum of Contemporary Art, or MOCA Shanghai, which opened in late September with way too many speeches, a retrospective of purposely kitschy portraits by the French duo Pierre et Gilles and a party that rocked well past midnight.
There's less government control of the arts than in Beijing, she said, adding that even the government-sponsored Shanghai Biennale, an international contemporary art exhibition, is far more adventurous than its Beijing counterpart.

The Dashanzi Art District -- known simply as "798" to aficionados and located in the northeastern part of the city -- is the best example to date of a site where foreign visitors can see for themselves the serious art scene that has developed in Beijing.
However, since this building was where the development of Dashanzi into a center for contemporary Chinese art began, the number itself has become a symbol of the entire complex.
This represents just a small sample of the younger art generation’s simultaneously ironic and humorous view of their country’s recent history and of the present’s cult of trash.
