The Ancient Egypt Site - Dashur, Cradle of the Pyramids
The shift from Step Pyramid to true pyramid represents a shift in ideology, turning from a royal tomb that represented a staircase to the stars to a monument that was both a solar symbol and a reference to the primeval mound from which all life had supposedly sprung.
The Middle Kingdom pyramids at Dashur were built closer to the edge of fertile land.
At least the Northern part of Dashur continued to be used as a necropolis for private burials during the New Kingdom.

 DASHUR
This was the only pyramid open to the public at Dashur while we were there.
Unfortunately, you are allowed to get no closer than the nearby parking lot (whose edge is denoted by the line of stones in the foreground), so you can't examine the casing stones up close, and you can only see the pyramid from one angle.
There was another pyramid visible in the distance at Dashur, called the Black Pyramid of Amenemhet III.

The Ancient Egypt Site - The Pyramid of Amenemhat III at Dashur
The last pyramid to be built at Dashur is dated to the reign of Amenemhat III, towards the end of the 12th Dynasty.
It was located in the South of Dashur, quite near to the edge of the cultivated land.
Unfortunately, the pyramid was built too close to the valley and to Lake Dashur and the mudbrick core was weakened by ground water.

Egyptian Journey 2003: Photos: Dashur: Bent Pyramid
The second of Sneferu's pyramids in Dashur, the Bent Pyramid is a very obvious example of the trial-and-error that accompanied pyramid building in the Old Kingdom.
In fact there is very little known about why Sneferu built two pyramids in Dashur, less than a kilometer apart -- and an additional pyramid at Maidum -- all completed in his lifetime.
It's also possible that he was simply running a pyramid assembly line (according to a note in Rough Guide) so that he would leave behind a series of partially- or fully-finished pyramids that could be used by subsequent kings without the requisite ten or thirty years on the throne to build their own.

This pyramid received its name because the lower portion of the structure has a slope of 54 degrees, but the upper portion has a slope of 43 degrees.

 Ancient Egypt Pyramid Tour Experience
Dashur is arguably the most important pyramid field in Egypt outside Giza and Saqqara, although until recently the site was inaccessible due to its location within a military base, and hence was virtually unknown outside archaeological circles.
The site which is in the vicinity of the oasis of Fayyum, midway between Dashur and Meidun, and about 100 kilometres south of Cairo, is believed to be in the vicinity of the ancient city of Iti-tawi (the precise location of which remains unknown), which served as the capital of Egypt during the 12th Dynasty.
The pyramid at Meidun is one of three constructed during the reign of Sneferu, and is believed by some to have been commenced by that pharaoh's father and predecessor, Huni.

Pharaoh Heaven - Egypt \ History \ Pyramids
It was probably intended to be a fairly small pyramid, with a slope angle of about 60 degrees, but the builders encountered structural problems and had to put another layer around the base, this time with an angle of about 55 degrees.
It is the first instance of a non-step pyramid (the Meydum pyramid was converted from a step pyramid right at the end of Snefru’s reign), and it clearly show the problems builders faced when constructing such an edifice.
Another one of Snefru’s pyramids, also built at Dashur, the North Pyramid (also known as the Red Pyramid) shows how much the builders had learnt from their mistakes made when they constructed the Bent Pyramid.

Its first tombs, dated to the beginning of the 1st Dynasty, were built on the ridge of the desert plateau, probably immediately to the west of the new capital of Memphis.
It is believed by some that the oldest remains of Memphis are to be found underneath the modern-day village of Abusir, immediately to the east of the Archaic Tombs.
Against this view, however, it must be noted that when the first pyramids were built at Dashur, in the beginning of the 4th Dynasty, there was a large area of unexploited desert between the two sites.

Snofru actually erected two pyramids at Dashur, one rhomboidal in style, indicating an inability on the part of its architects to achieve their original goal.
Snofru was deified by the kings of the 12th Dynasty, and many rulers of that line chose to erect their own mortuary complexes beside his.

Antiquity, Reviews: Blue Review September 2003
Since the excavation in 1894 of the Dashur boats this knowledge has been supplemented by spectacular archaeological discoveries of ships and boats.
Three introductory chapters outline not only the practicalities of woodworking and boat and ship construction, but also the contexts in which these vessels should be viewed (from the prevailing winds and currents of the Nile, to trade, tribute and an obsession with the afterlife).
The description of the construction of the Dashur boats, for example, is thoroughly comprehensive, to the extent that comparisons are drawn between the construction of this vessel and Khufu I, some five hundred years its senior, that imply a degree of continuity rarely commented upon.

DASHUR, Egypt (CNN) -- In Egypt's pyramid-studded landscape, there is a new gem on the tourist horizon: A plateau of giant pyramids which will soon be open to visitors for the first time.
Archeologists now hope to deflect some of that enthusiasm to a set of pyramids on a former military site at Dashur, not far from the famed tombs of Giza.
The military camp was established at the base of the 343-foot-high red pyramid during the height of Middle East tensions, and had been closed to the public for decades.

Not only that, but it is clear that the Egyptians were capable of raising even larger pyramids than those at Dashur with steeper angles than 43º 21', for the Great Pyramid of Giza has an angle of slope of 51º 51' and its neighbour, that of Khephren, of 52º 20'.

During his 24 years as Pharaoh, Sneferu was responsible for the construction of three major pyramids - the completion of that of Huni at Meydum, and his own two pyramids at Dashur.
The first of these pyramids is known as the Bent Pyramid, (top left) due to the irregular change in angle midway up the pyramid - changing from a a 54degree angle to a 43 degree.
It is more likely, however, that Sneferu was interred in the northern-most pyramid at Dashur, known as the Red Pyramid (bottom left).
