A contempary of Gorgosaurus, Daspletosaurus was founded on a frame originally believed to be an undescribed species of Gorgosaurus.
The massive, stocky construct of the two tyrannosaurus and certain similarities in skull structures seem to be indicators of a close phylogenetic relationship between the two genera.

Daspletosaurus had a massive head and vice-like jaws equipped with teeth that sported serrated edges.
Daspletosaurus could be terrifyingly aggressive, but because of its relatively small brain its behavior was likely more automatic than calculated.

Notes: Discovered in Alberta, Canada, Daspletosaurus was a contemporary of Albertosaurus.
A marginally smaller, close relative of Tyrannosaurus, Daspletosaurus' possessed the typical tyrannosaurid two-fingered hands, but its powerful jaws were equipped with larger (although fewer) teeth than Tyrannosaurus.
It is conjectured that the heavily-built Daspletosaurus preyed upon ceratopsians.

Daspletosaurus (dahs-PLEE-toh-sawr-us) meaning "frightful lizard", because of its fearsome teeth (Greek daspletos = frightful + sauros = lizard), was theropod dinosaur, which had a head as large as the later Tyrannosaurus rex, with just as vicious teeth.
With such large teeth, this carnivorous dinosaur may have been able to attack and kill heavily plated species of dinosaurs, like ankylosaurs.
Russell hypothosized that while the more lightly built and more common Gorgosaurus may have specialised in preying on the more common species of hadrosaurids, the heavier, more robust Daspletosaurus may have specialised in the less prevalent armoured species of the time such as the ceratopsids.

The co-existence of these two animals have lead to the proposal that they were
specialized for killing different kinds of prey: Albertosaurus may have went after fleeter prey, like duck-billed dinosaurs and ornithomimids, while Daspletosaurus tackled heavier horned dinosaurs.
