Dassault Etendard II - strike fighter
Dassault prepared a basic design to meet both requirements, and, being of the opinion that the officially-backed specifications would result in underpowered aircraft, evolved a third version of the design as a private venture.
The three versions of the aircraft were designated Etendard (Standard) II, IV and VI, and the first to commence its flight test programme was the Etendard II.
Competing with the Breguet 1100, the Etendard II was powered by two 940kg Turbomeca Gabizo turbojets and proposed armament included two 30mm cannon which were to be installed as a pack interchangeable with one containing 32 Matra 105 68mm rockets.

Dassault developed the Etendard to meet a NATO requirement for a light strike fighter.
The requirement for an Etendard replacement was to originally be met by a navalised development of the SEPECAT Jaguar.
This failed to eventuate and the French navy eventually settled on Dassaults proposal for the Super Etendard.

The second pre-production aircraft was completed with an 5080kg Rolls-Royce Avon 51 engine and flap blowing as the Etendard IVB, and one additional pre-production aircraft ordered in September 1959 was completed with a camera nose as an Etendard IVP.

 CAEA : Etendard IV M
The Etendard, result of a series of prototypes initially named Mystère, was designed in order to take part in the competition organized in 1955 by NATO, relating to a strike fighter able to operate take-off from summarily arranged runways.
The development of this new carrierborne fighter is the subject of modifications relating in particular to the installation of an Atar 8 turbojet (alternative Atar 9 without afterburning), a fuselage redrawn according to the law of the surfaces and an increase in the surface of the wing to compensate the weight increase.
Etendard IV M will be gradually withdrawn from the service progressively with the arrival of the Super-Etendard as from 1978.

 Fighter aircraft Summary
The generation terminology was initiated by Russian defense parlance in referring to the F-35 Lightning II as a "fifth generation" plane.
The McDonnell F-4 Phantom II was designed as a pure interceptor for the United States Navy, but became a highly successful multi-role aircraft for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps as well as many other nations.
In reaction to the continually rising cost of fighters and the demonstrated success of the F-4 Phantom II, multirole fighters became popular during this period, and even aircraft designed for a specific role (as the F-4 had) acquired multi-role capability.

It completed carrier deck trials before being cancelled in favor of the Dassault Super Etendard, an act which in hindsight is widely regarded as having been a bad move.
The Super Etendard was clearly less capable, but it was sold as a modest low-cost update of the existing Etendard IV, and though the "modest" part turned out to be arguably true, the "low-cost" part turned out to be unarguably false.
Dassault worked hard to sell their Mirage F1 and had no interest in selling the Jaguar, and so the Jaguar International program basically fell into BAC / BAe's lap, with the British concern finally obtaining full rights for export sales from Dassault in 1980.

These aircraft are generally seen as retaining the same basic characteristics of fourth generation planes but with enhanced capabilities provided by more advanced technologies that might be seen in fifth generation fighters.
