Dassault Aviation Mirage 2000 - Scramble
The Mirage 2000 was selected as the main French Air Force combat aircraft 18 December 1975.
The Mirage 2000 was initially developed as an interceptor with the SNECMA M53 power plant and Thomson-CSF (now Thales) RDM multimode pulse Doppler radar.
Subsequently the Mirage 2000 was developed for strike/attack roles as Mirage 2000N/D. The second-generation Mirage 2000-5 was first flown as a prototype 24 October 1990, with the initial production aircraft flown in October 1995 and type qualification granted (for SF1 French production standard) by the DGA procurement agency on 13 June 1997.

The Mirage III family grew out of French government studies begun in 1952 that led in early 1953 to a specification for a lightweight all-weather interceptor, capable of climbing to 18 kilometers in six minutes, with speed in level flight of Mach 1.3.
The prototype Mirage III flew on 17 November 1956, and attained a speed of Mach 1.52 on its seventh flight.
The Mirage IIIC was armed with twin 30 millimeter DEFA revolver-type cannon, fitted in the belly with the gun ports under the air intakes.

 DASSAULT MIRAGE 2000-5
The newcomer to the Mirage 2000 family, the Mirage 2000-5 is a multi-role single-seated or two seated fighter.
As a multi-role combat aircraft with particularly versatile air-to-air mission capabilities, the Mirage 2000-5 integrates the state-of-the-art of the know-how based on the experience gained from the previous Mirage 2000 versions (Mirage 2000 DA, Mirage 2000 E, Mirage 2000 D) and is designed for the most-advanced armaments.
Mirage 2000 is equipped with a multi-mode THOMSON-CSF RDY Doppler radar which allows, in air defense missions, multi-target selections at all altitudes and look down/shoot down operation.

 The Dassault Mirage 2000 & 4000
Primary armaments of the Mirage 2000C in the interceptor role were the Matra "Super 530" medium-range semi-active radar-guided air to air missile (AAM) on the inboard wing pylons and the Matra "Magic" short-range infrared-seeking AAM on the outboard wing pylons.
Dassault had no buyers for the big Mirage 4000 and it was mothballed for a few years, but pulled out of retirement in 1986 with a spiffy new desert camouflage scheme to be used as a test platform for the Rafale fighter.
Mirage 2000 variants have a bewildering and variable set of designations, with confusion partly caused by the fact that the French use suffixes to designate capability, such as "N" for "Nuclear", rather than place in a sequence.

Though the Mirage F1s were the most modern of the fleet, having been delivered from 1977 onwards, they were the primary element of South Africa's air defence and strike fleet and to withdraw them for an upgrade would have left an unacceptable gap in its air defence and strike capability.
In addition there were already a few successful Mirage III upgrades from which to learn, such as the Kfir and Mirage III NG, so the SAAF's Mirage III fleet was chosen as the basis for the upgrade.

 The Dassault Rafale
Dassault was authorized to begin full development of an ACX demonstrator in early 1983, naming the machine the "Rafale (Squall)", while SNECMA began work on a new afterburning bypass turbojet for the ACX, the "M88".
Up to three of the big bulbous-nosed 2,000 liter (528 US gallon) external tanks, much like those developed for the Mirage 2000 but lacking tailfins, can also be carried, with one on the centerline pylon and one on the inner wet pylon on each wing.
Ironically, Dassault is still having good luck with export sales of the cheaper Mirage 2000, with the latest versions of this proven fighter benefiting from technology developed for the Rafale.

 Dassault Mirage 2000
Designed as a competitor for the General Dynamics F-16 Falcon, which defeated the Mirage F1 in a contest for a new jet fighter for the air forces of Denmark, Belgium, Netherlands and Norway, the Mirage 2000 was a small single-engined, delta wing fighter, a development of the Mirage III fighter that first flew in 1956.
Unlike its predecessor, the new Mirage 2000 was an unstable aircraft with full fly-by-wire, quadruplex system with four analog computers, full authority on three axes (pitch, roll and yaw) and no mechanical back-up.
Because the Mirage 2000 used the Mirage III as a basis it was possible to develop the aircraft in only 27 months.

AirToAirCombat.Com: Dassault Mirage 2000-5 in Detail
By the late 1980s, the Mirage 2000 was beginning to age relative to the competition, and export sales slumped.
Dassault needed an order from the ADA to help promote foreign sales, and after some lobbying, in 1993 the ADA decided to upgrade 37 of their existing Mirage 2000s to 2000-5 specification as a stopgap before the arrival of the Rafale in ADA service.
Dassault then extended the improvements a bit further with the "Mirage 2000-9", which features an "RDY-2" radar, the high-power "Modular Data Processing Unit (MDPU)" designed for the Rafale, and an improved countermeasures suite with a new lowband jammer.
