Dassault Mirage III - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mirage III family grew out of French government studies begun in 1952 that led in early 1953 to a specification for a lightweight, all-weather interceptor capable of climbing to 18,000 m (59,040 ft) in six minutes and able to reach Mach 1.3 in level flight.
The Mirage IIIC was exported to Israel as the Mirage IIICJ, to South Africa as the Mirage IIICZ, and to Switzerland as the Mirage IIICS, to which one was sold in preparation for license construction.
Mirage IIIBJ for Israel, Mirage IIIDL for Lebanon, Mirage IIIDP for Pakistan, Mirage IIIBZ and Mirage IIIDZ for South Africa, Mirage IIIDE for Spain, Mirage IIIBS and Mirage IIIDS for Switzerland, Mirgae IIIDV for Venezuela.

 The Dassault Mirage 2000 & 4000
Primary armaments of the Mirage 2000C in the interceptor role are the Matra Super 530 medium-range semi-active radar-guided air to air missile (AAM) on the inboard wing pylons, and the Matra Magic short-range infrared-seeking AAM on the outboard wing pylons.
Dassault is also competing for a Brazilian deal with the "Mirage 2000 BR", another variant of the Mirage 2000-9, with the French company partnering with EMBRAER of Brazil on the deal, though due to Brazilian budget problems the competition has dragged on for years.
Dassault had no buyers for the big Mirage 4000 and it was mothballed for a few years, but pulled out of retirement in 1986 with a spiffy new desert camouflage scheme to be used as a test platform for the Rafale fighter.

 CAEA : Mirage 5 F
The Mirage 5, equipped with the same airframe as the Mirage IIIC and engine as the Mirage IIIE, was conceived as a daylight ground strike fighter (radar replaced by a simplified navigation and attack system).
The Mirage 5 BA of the Force Aérienne Belge, although deprived of radar, are also equipped with rather advanced navigation and attack systems.
Initially not envisaged for France, the Mirage 5 F equipped the Escadron de Chasse 3/13 Auvergne, based in Colmar and the Escadron de Chasse 3/3 Ardennes, in Nancy-Ochey.

On some Mirages, the leading edge of the tailfin was a straight line, while on those with the HF antenna the leading edge had a sloping extension forward.

 DASSAULT MIRAGE 2000-5
The newcomer to the Mirage 2000 family, the Mirage 2000-5 is a multi-role single-seated or two seated fighter.
As a multi-role combat aircraft with particularly versatile air-to-air mission capabilities, the Mirage 2000-5 integrates the state-of-the-art of the know-how based on the experience gained from the previous Mirage 2000 versions (Mirage 2000 DA, Mirage 2000 E, Mirage 2000 D) and is designed for the most-advanced armaments.
The Mirage 2000-5 new weapon delivery system is designed for firing, in air defense missions, the MATRA MICA multi-target air-to-air intercept and combat missiles, as well as for use of Magic 2 combat missiles whose system integrates autonomous detection capabilities.

Dassault began work on an update featuring Thomson-CSF multimode "Radar Doppler Multitarget" ("RDY" in its French acronym); a more powerful processor; improved defensive avionics; compatibility with the new Matra "Mica" AAM, which is available in both heat-seeking and active radar homing versions; and a new five-display "glass cockpit" layout borrowed from the Rafale program.
Dassault needed an order from the ADA to help promote foreign sales, and after some lobbying, in 1993 the ADA decided to upgrade 37 of their existing Mirage 2000s to 2000-5 specification as a stopgap before the arrival of the Rafale in ADA service.
The UAE Mirage 2000-9s are well-equipped for the strike mission, as they are being provided with the "Shehab" laser targeting pod, a variant of the Thales Damocles pod, and the Nahar navigation pod, complementing the air-to-ground modes of the RDY-2 radar.

In the mid-1960s, Israel approached Dassault about the possibility of modifying its Mirage III fighter into a simpler and cheaper daylight ground attack fighter.
Before Israel was able to accept its first Mirage 5, the French government allied itself with the Arab states and placed an embargo on defense shipments to Israel.
Dassault later offered an improved version, the Mirage 50, with a new engine and greater fuel and payload capacities.

 The Dassault Mirage 2000 & 4000
While the delta wing was outdated by that time, Dassault engineers moved the aircraft's center of lift in front of its center of gravity, giving the fighter a degree of instability that enhanced maneuverability.
This gave the Mirage 2000 a level of agility that the Mirage III and 5 lacked, and in fact the new machine would become known for its handling.
Mirage 2000 variants have a bewildering and variable set of designations, with confusion partly caused by the fact that the French use suffixes to designate capability, such as "N" for "Nuclear", rather than place in a sequence.

As mentioned, the Swiss acquired a single Mirage IIIC for tests, and then went on to produce 36 "Mirage IIIS" interceptors, with strengthened wings, airframe, and undercarriage.
