Dassault Mirage IV Soon after General Charles de Gaulle came into office, in June 1958, he said France was to single-handedly develop what he called its "dissuasion of aggression" weapon.
Whereas the Mirage III could only withstand Mach 2 for a few minutes, the Mirage IV needed to hold that speed for much longer than the 20 or so minutes required for the temperature to stabilize throughout the outer structure and inner casings housing the equipment, petrol and hydraulic liquid.
IN the late 1980s the 19 of the Mirage IV force were upgraded to IVP standard with dual INS, new RWR and compatibility with the ASMP standoff nuclear missile.

Dassault was leading a consortium that (at first) was monitoring the development of the Sud-Ouest S.O. 4050 Vautour, but their interest was focused in 1956 on the possibilities of re-developing earlier studies of Dassault for a two-engine night fighter.
Dassault was the prime contractor for the complete weapon system: aircraft, navigation and attack management system, as well as casing and release system for the nuclear device.
In June 1964, it was decided to order 12 additional Mirage IV-A having in addition the strategic capacity; this was explained by the fact that the force Mirage IV was to remain in service at least until 1975, and that had consequently to be compensated for attrition.

 The Dassault Mirage IV
It is said that there is nothing so permanent as a temporary solution, and the Mirage IV was still flying in combat at the end of the century, if admittedly in small numbers and as a spy plane, not a bomber.
With RATO boosters and the heavy-duty landing gear, the Mirage IVA was in principle capable of operating from rough airstrips.
The Mirage IV* would have been license-built by BAC and was to have featured the avionics suite developed for the TSR.2, as well as a fuselage extension of 61 centimeters (2 feet) and twin Rolls-Royce Spey 25R afterburning turbofans, providing 93.4 kN (9,525 kgp / 21,000 lbf) thrust each.

The Mirage IV obtained a new lease on life in the bomber role when 18 were rebuilt as "Mirage IVPs", where "P" for "Penetration", to carry the ASMP ramjet-powered stand-off missile, instead of the AN-22 bomb.
By the end of the century, all Mirage IV bombers had been retired, with the Mirage 2000 serving as the carrier for the ASMP missile.

Dassault was hedging bets of their own as well, designing a somewhat scaled down interceptor version of the F2, the "Mirage F3", and a lightweight multirole version, the "Mirage F1".
The Mirage F1 was a good aircraft at an attractive price, but it was followed a bit too quickly by the Dassault Mirage 2000, which was clearly superior in most respects and so became preferred by customers.
