Topic: Dassault Ouragan

Dassault Ouragan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ouragan was smaller than the Thunderjet, however, weighing about a tonne less, and used a thin wing much like that of the Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star, as well as a swept-back tailplane.
The Ouragan did not have a long first-line service life with the AdA, being phased out in favor of the much-improved Dassault Mystere IVA beginning in the spring of 1955.
Ouragans would be relegated to advanced training as better aircraft became predominant in Israeli service, but the type would see more combat in the 1967 Six-Day War.

 JMGT's 1/48 MD450 Ouragan
The Ouragan achieved IOC with the Israelis on November 29, 1955, and scored the first aerial victories on April 12, 1956, when two Egyptian Vampires were shot down over the Negev desert by No. 323.
Ouragans, Meteors and Mustangs were the vanguard of the Israeli attack against the Egyptians on October 29, 1956.
The Ouragan proved its worth as a ground attack aircraft by claiming the majority of the Egyptian armored vehicles destroyed during the brief conflict, plus half a share in the destruction of the Egyptian destroyer "Ibrahim el-Awal" when two Ouragans attacked the ship with rockets on October 31.

The Ouragan was armed with four Hispano Mark V 20-millimeter cannon beneath the air intake, and could carry up to a tonne (2,200 pounds) of stores under the wings.
One of the original Ouragan prototypes had been built as a demonstrator for a night fighter, with a solid nose containing air intercept radar and the air intakes moved to the side of the aircraft, under the cockpit.
This aircraft had the solid nose and lateral intakes of the Ouragan night fighter variant, and was powered by the Tay.

The Egyptian destroyer manged to elude both the IAF and the Israeli Navy until it was attacked by a pair of Ouragans on the morning of November 1st.

The Dassault Ouragan, Mystere, & Super Mystere
The Ouragan was inspired by American designs, and had a general configuration like that of the Republic F-84 Thunderjet: essentially a "stovepipe" with intake in the nose, low-set straight wing, bubble canopy, and tricycle landing gear.
The Ouragan was armed with four Hispano Mark V 20-millimeter cannon beneath the air intake, and could carry up to a tonne of stores under the wings.
Armee de l'Air pilots found the Ouragan very pleasant to fly and a very stable gun and rocket firing platform, though it did have a tendency to snap into a spin in tight turns as it had a somewhat stubby fuselage.

The Ouragan was inspired by American designs, and had a vague resemblance to the Republic F-84 Thunderjet: essentially a "stovepipe" design with intake in the nose, low-set straight wing, bubble canopy, and tricycle landing gear.
The "Ouragan" served with several Armée de l'Air squadrons until replaced by its swept wing cousin, the MD.452, or "Mystère" from 1954-56.

There were several cross-border incursions, however, by Indian aircraft, and on 24 April 1965 a section of Sabres was scrambled to intercept a radar contact fifty miles inside Pakistani territory and apparently heading for Karachi.
The contact turned out to be an IAF Dassault Ouragan, whose pilot lowered his flaps and undercarriage when the Sabres made a warning pass and came down near the village of Jangshahi, wiping off his landing gear in the process.
The offensive was supported by substantial numbers of Indian aircraft, but their attacks were uncoordinated and there was little evidence of a coherent air/ground plan of action.

Good examples are the F-18 Super Hornet, Eurofighter Typhoon, and Dassault Rafale.
All three make use of advanced avionics to improve mission capability and limited stealth characteristics to reduce visibility when compared to older fourth generation aircraft.

In fact the situation remained very much the same during the lat 1960s and early 1970s, unless the Soviets started delivered more advanced versions of the MiG-21 to different Arab air forces.
